I'm just getting back into the cockpit after some time away. One of the downsides of a shared airplane is the the next guy needs to muck with the seat adjustments.

Well, I am beginning to think that perhaps the 172S cockpit doesn't fit my broad shouldered 6 foot frame very well. I have been compromising my seating position...or perhaps I just haven't found it yet.

My seating position for normal flying is well forward to give me high command of brakes and rudder pedals. For long XCs I usually slide back for endurance comfort.

A big problem I discovered flying with Cap'n Ron is that my body to seat/floor contact points aren't stable and also lends to poor yaw feel.

I am open to learning a new sight picture if that's what I need to do. Any other suggestions?

Have you played with the seat height adjustment? I'm your height and probably your dimensions, and I don't have a problem fitting comfortably in a 172S but I have to make sure the seat is cranked down low enough so I'm not whacking my head on the ceiling, if some short person flew the plane before me.

Playing with the crank is unquestionable. What I am looking for is advice on setup.

Sigh... I think this is best done in person.

172? eyes slightly below the top of the side window, feet close enough for full travel on the pedals, radios within arms reach - I have trouble getting close enough to comfortably reach the elevator trim on the N's & M's.

P.S. on of the A&P's that works on the 'kota is short, darn short, and he always adjusts the seat forward and up then leaves it like that - crawling into the seat in that position is not so much fun...

No idea what you mean

Citations have balls - line up the balls and the eyes are at the correct height (IIRC). Mari has posted a picture of her balls - don't know where she got'em or who they used to belong to. Do not **** off Mari.

I can type balls but not p*ss...maybe I can type pee.

Top set of balls, not the bottom set. You line up the white ball so that it is centered over the red ball. That is, you adjust your seat height, you don't physically move the ball.

Our balls are happy balls. At least most of the time.

Nice idea on the balls, except its a shared aircraft. I'd likely get apathetic responses even if I offered to buy the balls.

I start with the seat all the way up and crank it down to a compromise between seeing over the nose and seeing out the side windows. I'm 6 foot also and crank it down usually 6 to 8 turns.

And forward just barely enough to get comfortably get full rudder movement. [This is a benefit to Cessnas vs. Pipers (can't test the rudder travel in a PA28 until you're moving).]

Well yer a Dick will always be safe 'cause Dick's a name just like Long Fat Dong.

back to how to adjust your freaking seat....

Yes, I understand yer a Dick - I work for one. No need to type about how to adjust *my* seat, I've got that figgered out.

Mine is fixed so I'm SOL in that regard
