Who is this guy...?

Couldn't watch it all, don't know who he is. Dramatic and condescending.

"Secret" at 13:10. Only if you haven't been paying attention.

Mostly nonsense. Ooh, avionics shops can only handle one airplane a week. Ooh I might get in trouble for busting airspace that I shouldn't be in that I could have gotten away with before.

All of this is only an issue, just like the smartphone in your pocket, if we lose our democracy. And if we do we have much bigger problems...

His numbers are off. This time last year the FAA and the avionics industry were saying 100,000 still to go. There are 340 shops in the US. Let alone the five days per install stat.

So assuming everyone wants to be compliant, all 100000, that just means each shop has to do ten a month on average to hit the deadline.

He's a bit off on a few things, but the possible abuse of the ADSB system by government for fees and 4A and the public privacy stuff is pretty on the ball. He also didn't mention that for much of the US you don't need any ADSB at all.

No doubt but the same is true of the smartphone in your pocket, the ezpass on your car, every credit card, facial recognition on security cameras and on and on. This isn't some isolated thing that we can be surveilled....

Can you point me to a free public webpage where I can watch your every move from that smart phone and also run your phone number and get your verified (as in a letter sent which you must reply to ever few years) address?

I only got to the part where he looked like the guy with the lisp from Princess Bride. I couldn't make it any further than that

No doubt true, but his beef was with the government and "surveillance". If you don't think the government already has a ton of power to do so...

Perhaps someone can confirm, I thought ATC already had the capability to tag and follow a radar target to destination, even without Mode C or ADS-B.

For public data there's an anonymous option if UAT only.

This is like "hey babe just the tip", or burglars can just break in so why bother locking the front door, so because the government has broken your 4a rights before, just let them go all the way? I'd hope the American people would be smart enough to have the opposite reaction, y'all government type have proven you can't be trusted not to break the constitution, and I demand more and more privacy.

Just ask for the ADSB compliant chip when they put it in your forehead.
That'll save the expense of upgrading, and won't matter what plane you fly!

Bar code: When your friend gets the good looking one, they are obligated to buy 4 extra shots for you, pay the cab fare, and keep quiet about the whole event later.

Sure but radar coverage is spottier, and they won't know your tail number unless you tell em...

I don't disagree at all. I'm just pointing out this guy in the video has all this outrage about ADSB, and yet we don't complain about license plate readers all over the place.... and on and on

Many times they don't have the coverage to follow them all the way to the destination. Depends on the area.

For you flatlanders in the middle of the country, radar is an issue.
If you live on the left or right coast we have these things called hills and valleys.
We fly in them all the time and no one knows where we are.
You can fly right into the pattern at a lot of controlled airports in my area and never appear on the radar.
Not that I would EVER do such a thing to annoy a particular ATC employee. Right Jim?

I don't like being under surveillance, and personally, I believe the whole fees and mileage charge thing is for real.
But, again, I am a paranoid SOB.

I thought everybody already knew it was all about raising revenue and lowering expenses for the airlines and airports served by the airlines?

Aside from all of the ADS-B paranoia many of the newer ADS-B out solutions do not require installation by an avionics shop - even the Garmin GTX-335 can be installed and signed-off by an A&P.

Hearing some similar arguments from when transponders were being required in the 30 mile ring.:lol::lol:

There is a VERY large difference in security and privacy comparing a simple mode C to a ADSB system.

How is it paranoid?

As a student of recent and past history, I'd say protecting your privacy, as best you can, is prudent, not doing so leaning towards negligent.

We don't?

The American People have been conditioned over the last 60 years or so to treat anyone who asserts their privacy and rights to be a deranged right- wing kook.

Those who violate the social contract must be isolated!

That would be awesome. (Has it recently changed? I remember Garmin being all uppity about all their devices being installed by an "approved dealer")
If you have a reference, I'd love one, pretty pretty please. So that I can print it out and give it to my A&P.

I've been flying ADS-B equipped airplanes for 4 years in Alaska. If you are that paranoid about people watching what you do then maybe you should seek professional help.

I was going to seek professional help with my paranoia, but I know that would get me on a watch list or something.

You're also a nobody. As am I. :)

Sorry, harsh but true. Nobody gives a crap where you go. Or me.

There are folks who have legitimate reasons not to telegraph their location.

Heck, I've known a couple of people who were just unlucky and their paths crossed psychos who stalked them. No particular reason other than their stalkers were psychos. True psychos.

I can imagine they'd want to protect their location from being easy to access if they had aviation habits. They'd both spent big money double-blinding addresses after moving to new cities and removing their online presence for the most part. They didn't even buy their houses under their own names.

Court orders of protection are absolutely worthless, I've learned from watching them try to get some relief from their stalkers.

I agree with him.
Nothing really new there, I think most of us realized what is coming.
We might pick nits on some of his facts but for the most part he's likely on the money.
(I think his message be more effective if it was presented more factually and with less drama, but I have always been put off by Hollywood.)

Just had mine done last week. Brought it in to the avionics shop on Wed afternoon, they worked on it Thursday and Friday, was done by 5 pm Friday, so not anywhere near 5 days. New Garmin 345. Took about a 300 nm cross country this weekend, loved the traffic and weather!

Fortune Business mag had an article in latest issue that the percent of business jets that have upgraded is small. They predict some jets wont make it in time. Its going to be really interesting as D-Day approaches if exceptions will be granted.
