En-Route
An experimental, long-range, heavy bomber, built for the Army in the 1920's, it was an early attempt at building a strategic bomber. The project was a source of criticism because of its cost ($525,000) and because it couldn't fulfill its intended performance goals. On a flight from Dayton to Washington, it couldn't climb above the Appalachian mountains and had to turn back. It flew with a crew of 7.
