I got a 32" Vizio for Christmas and was thinking about putting in a little more money and getting one with a bigger screen. I have it narrowed down to a few.

All of these have good reviews. I feel like 50" is a little big but the prices are pretty good. I will have $400 credit if I take this one back. I'm torn on the plasma v. lcd part. I also don't know how these brands compare to each other. I know Panasonic is know for their plasma and Vizio is a good lcd, but I don't know on the other ones.

I don't have cable so this would be mostly for watching downloaded movies and playing the occasional game on them.

Thanks

Edit: Just found this one too. Free two day shipping and no tax. Plus it's 120hz instead of 60hz if that difference is noticeable.

Beats hell out of me. I have two Viz 32's and like them a lot. How big is your room?

The wall is 6ft wide x 8ft tall, and the couch is 9.5-10ft away from the wall. The room itself is pretty big but it's a funky layout. I'll see if I can upload a picture.

We have the same problem in our living room as it's a 1920's house. We actually just said "pi$$ on it" and bought a 55" Samsung that was on clearance.

I really like our 5 foot TV screen. We have a combined family room/kitchen, so we had the thing mounted to the wall just a bit higher than regular couch viewing level and we can tilt the screen to watch from the kitchen while eating, no problem! Hide all the cable and power cords behind the wall and it looks great! :)

Wow, I would be afraid the wall of this old apartment would fall down if I put a TV that big on it. Here is my layout, as much as I want the crazy big 50" I think I'm leaning more towards the 42".

I like your sectional wall art! :) And yeah... the Geek Squad put a huge metal frame bolted to the wall before the TV even went up there. It was a process. And in an apartment, the landlord might have something to say about any large changes to the interior walls. Even if it is for a nice TV!

Here's the view from my kitchen looking across to the family room. I like the size of the TV for the scale of the room... it doesn't look oversized to me for the space and it's nice to be able to watch from the breakfast bar in the mornings. :)

Yea they'd probably shoot me for that. Yours does look appropriately sized for the room.

I'm a little sad to be putting a TV where my sectionals are. I like to come home and just sit on my couch for a bit and stare at them. I don't have any other walls that are clear or big enough to re-hang them.

Get a front projection TV and wall screen that you can raise and lower. That way you'll be able to adjust the screen size as well as retain the sectionals on the wall.

btw wrt screen size. In 2002 I bought a 34" HDTV. In theory it was the correct size for the room layout at the time. Not long after I bought it I realized that a bigger screen would have given a better "movie screen" experience. Right now I'm considering a 55" TV even though the theory is that a 46" would be sufficient.

edit: oh yeah, 120 MHz would be better than 60 MHz, unless you don't care about watching sports.

Rule 1: Don't buy it a Wal-Mart.

You got a Costco nearby?

There were a bunch of new LCDs announced at CES in las Vegas. I'd look for the prices to drop some more.

Samsung and LG are OK brands. I'd go with a Panasonic if i wasn't enjoying my 73" Mitsubishi DLP so much. I guess Vizio is no longer the bargain brand.

We have a 32" Visio in the bedroom, and a new 47" LCD Visio (120 Hz) in the living room. I love the Visio brand, and the LCD is INCREDIBLE! We're in an apartment, with the TV on a stand about 10.5ft away from the sofa; it was a little big at first, but I've learned to adjust :-). We got them both at Sam's for a pretty decent price.

We bought the same one. Love it, especially for sports. Hockey is incredible, you can actually see the puck. And blu-ray, it ruins you for movies in any other format.

Just make a video slideshow of scanned sectionals. :D

Consumer's Reports has a decent video on this if you belong. You seem pretty far along but it gives some good pros and cons. I've been told by several folks that Walmart sets it's own standards for vendors and folks got something that looked like that from another merchant, but it wasn't quite the same. If you're on that track, I'd compare any essential standards closely.

What I like about Amazon, is they seem to carry what CR reviews: model and all. Whenever I've gone to WM, they never have the exact same model (which to me means they've changed something.)

Best,

Dave

I don't belong to their group, but that's not a bad idea. Yea, I figure Wal Mart has companies make things to their own specs, but there has to be a trade off somewhere for the price I suppose.

I bought one today. A Panasonic 42" plasma. Cost me $75 dollars more. There was another 42" that would have been an even trade but I know Panasonic is know for their plasmas. We'll see how it goes. Anything is better than the nothing I have now.

They almost would let me take my old one back. I had to get into it with a manager about the fact that their web site says you can return electronics up until tomorrow without a receipt. Not to mention the fact the credit is on a gift card so the money is still being spent there anyway.

Thanks for all of the input guys.

As part of an interesting discussion at lunch today someone was commenting that plasma sets have a fixed life expectensy and that their brightness falls with time. Run them or don't run them, the clock is running as the gasses leak through the glass. Of course, the time to failure is probably longer than the electronics will last, but something to think about. Me? One DLP set (several years old) and one LCD set. Happy with both.
