Good Morning,

I have been using my first generation iPad for the longest time; however, the thing weighs a ton, and is really hard to manage when flying IFR.. at least for me. I fly rentals right now so the mounts are a little out of the question.

I am looking at the iPad Air, but the iPad Mini has caught my attention.... To note, this iPad will only be for flying... everything else will remain on the old one... I don't see the need for cellular as I have a Stratus and a WiFi hotpot from my local cellular provider...

Recommendations between the two, iPad Mini, iPad Air.... what has been the best for you, or what has not worked..

Thanks

FYI, the new "iPad Pro 2" will be launched in various sizes in the next 2-3 weeks.

I'm not quite sure what that means as to real availability to buy, but if you decide to go bigger than a mini, you may want to wait.

Air 2 (if you can fit it) or Mini 4. Same price, same great screen, slightly better processor (and screen real estate) in the Air. I stuck with the Mini, but space is at a premium in my Diamond, and I already have plenty of glass - the iPad is primarily just for approach plates.

I use a mini-2. Anything bigger than that is problematic to fit on a mount in a Cherokee.

I had mostly no problems with an Air-2 in my Cherokee 180. Sure it was a big large, but I could still move the yoke through the full range of motion and, if necessary see all the instruments. I did however, have to look around the iPad for certain gauges.

Used a ram clamp mount, the trick is to REALLY get the fit right so the ipad is flush against the yoke.

I have found the mini is just a more convenient size all around, especially in cockpit.

For mounting the "plus" size iphones work very well.

This assemblage of RAM mount pieces works good for holding an iPad Air on the yoke in a rental 172:

I'm a mini fan in the cockpit but it really comes down to space and personal preference.

Lots of mention of the "Air". The Pro 9.7 is the same size but much better screen brightness and less glare. Works on the Yoke of my PA32 very well. Wouldn't want anything larger. I also have a mini 3 that I can use on the yoke. I like them both. It's a trade off. The Pro 9.7 has more screen real estate and is much better in sunny conditions but is larger. The mini is smaller and less bulky with less screen size.

I think the key to making any ipad work well is having a good mount. I broke down and bought a Mygoflight mount for the yoke. Not cheap but SOOO much better than any Ram mount where mount location was limited. With the new mount my Ipad is rock solid and I can literally put it anywhere at any angle (and if I want I can twist from landscape to portrait in an instant, one handed).

I do the same but I have aftermarket yokes that the Air won't fit between.

iPad Mini 5 is rumoured to be announced April 4th.

It also hints this may be the last iteration for the mini which would be a real bummer. The mini is the perfect size.

Yes that's it. In order to use it you'll have to have the part that cradles the "device". I have two different iPads that I use (mini and pro 9.7) so I bought the cradle that is universal (sport) for small tablets. Works great.

I knew it was time to ditch the RAM mount when I had the foggles on shooting an RNAV approach. Focusing on the glideslope and CDI I went through some minor "bumps" and my RAM mount/iPad slowly leaned down into my lap!!! I'm not going to let a damn iPad mount kill me in IMC!

The mini also allows the wearing of polarized sunglasses.

The Air only works in one configuration (landscape or normal, I cannot remember).

I went with a Mini for that reason.
