Identifiers with K or identifiers without the K. Or identifiers that begin with the state abbreviation?

Are you talking about ariport IDs?

If so it is without the K.

The first airports were identified with a two letter city code. As in Los Angles = LA Chicago = CG, etc.

When the codes became three letter codes they added an X to the existing two letter codes hence LAX and CGX (Meigs).

Latter the ICAO become the international standards body that took on the responsibility for airport codes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICAO

K is the ICAO prefix for the continental US. Any three LETTER only airport identifier there can be made into an ICAO prefix by adding K. Numbers aren't allowed. METAR reporting requires an ICAO identifier which is why a lot of small airports with AWOS's got reidentified a few years back.

The old small airport designator was to use a single letter and two digits (in some combination) where the identifier was some FAA region (I10, W66, 2W5, ...). The laster FAA philosophy was to switch to the two letter postal abbreviation (NC29, ...)

I just ran across this article with just about everything you could want to know about airport identifiers.

"Airport ABCs: An Explanation of Airport Identifier Codes"

Somebody's been tinkering with things. I get METARS on airports with numbers in the identifier from DUATS now.

Was the chicken on a conveyor belt?

The chicken came first, according to the technical documentation...

Genesis 1:21 "So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind."

I don't know, have you ever read Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who is this God Person Anyway?

"In the beginning, the Universe was created. This made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad idea. "

It does not come as much of a surprise, really, that you are all acquainted with that most useful of books.
