Where the heck do you touch down on this runway?

In the beginning....it's only about 4000ft long.

Interesting, it's been at least a decade since I last flew into Apopka.
Back then it was known as Orlando Country Airport and it was a tiny runway with a very narrow width that never seemed to get bigger even on final.
The airport was bought out by some investor that promised to build some hangars and enlarge the existing runway.
Apparently the enlargement has come in so many rapid phases that the line painters can't keep up.

That is where I learned to fly 30+ years ago..... In fact I was part owner two times too.... Where the 33 is painted was a 50 foot deep hole and the trees in the lower left have pieces of a 210 buried among them from a aileron roll gone bad in front of a customer waiting for his new plane to be delivered....... As for the question.. The displaced threshhold has been moved numerous times to make the FAA and the surrounding neighbors happy so my guess is the "legal" one is the most west one.... The other end of the runway is just as convoluted too... The RR tracks on the North side have added confusion to really ****s off the FAA during the prior cert process... Or so I have been told.......

It was REAL fun back in the day when the fire tower was still standing.. That was the reason for the right traffic for 15 altho the mobile home park didn't help either... YMMV..

Slightly off topic already...but what's that airplane sitting there pretty close to the "A?" Looks like a turbine Convair to me, but I'm not sure.

Convair CV340, I think.

It almost looks like it has a Marco Airways logo on the tail, but Marco Airways only used the Martin 404 so i know it isn't. That is definately a Convair 340 or 440, looking at how the engine nacelles extend beyond the trailing edge of the wing.

Edit:
The plane is N1022C, Convair 240 in fake Pan-Am livery.

Please explain to me what the satellite photo shows that people are interpreting as being unusual. I know I'm missing something . . . .

Expand the picture a bit. There are about three different thresholds on that runway. Several blacked out. Due to lengthening the runway, I suspect.

This Convair 240 once belonged to American Airlines and then Mohawk Airlines until it sat derelict for over a decade at the Daytona airport.
92 year old Retired Pan Am Capt. LeRoy Brown bought the plane and moved it to Apopka as a museum piece.
Interesting article on Capt Brown and his life and flying history can be found here.

Looking at the shadows, that plane that's on short final for 15 appears to be a bit too close to the power lines for my taste...

I always wondered what he looked like. Does he still keep a razor in his shoe?

My boss bought a hangar lot there and got caught up in the furor since the developer was talking a business jet port and the FAA shortened the effective runway. Now (I have been told) insurance companies do not want to base any business jets at a field that short. The property values have dropped and those who own them are not happy.

I have landed and taken off from there in a 172 and it's plenty for that of course.

Beware of developers promising the sky and delivering the septic tank..:(

Caution... Wake Turbulence. OH COME ON!

Landed there once during Sun 'n' Fun for the cheap fuel. The runway must have been repaved since the Google pics were taken, because it's now a nice dark black asphalt surface with only one set of markings. :)

The location of the fuel pump is a bit odd, though - Taxiing off the runway would be pretty difficult if someone were fueling at the time. Crazy.

Oh, and the bathrooms were labeled funny - The one nearest the entry door is marked "Ladies." A little farther down where the ladies won't see it is the other one, and the sign on the door says "Aviators." Well, we know it takes a good sense of humor to be a female aviator!
