When teenagers fly commercially... what about ID?

As I mentioned in another thread my Department of Homeland Security issued ID was refused

So has my dad's flight crew ID. It clearly says his the name of the company he works for and "CREW" and large letters, along with his picture, employee number, expiration, etc. Sigh.

But that is not a government ID so Ic an see them doing that.

Mine was issued by the same people that they work for. What they wanted instead was my Ill DL. Which is the one state that TSA complains about the most as having the most easily counterfitted DL and have been threatening to not allow its use. Waht a bunch of F'ing idiots!

He provided both his TSA compliant flight crew ID and his Connecticut state DL, and still was given a hard time. Rumor is security at HPN has a grudge against all of the fractional pilots and flight attendants. The crew ID design had to be approved by the TSA prior to issuance, so they did that with HQ, and then it was refused at various airports.

Allow me to point out once again that the actual 9/11 hijackers had all the ID of any kind that was or would be required, issued by the U.S. government in their real names,] matching their tickets that used their real names.

We oughtta to send OBL a bill for the entertainment he gets from things like this.

Exactly. The whole ID thing is a farce. It's easy to get fake ID anyway. I doubt any TSA agent can distinguish real drivers licenses from fake for all 50 states. I sure can't and I'm supposed to be checking ID too.

Especially since - if you think about it - all ID derives from a single source - your birth certificate.

OK. Now she'll need a passport.

We got an excited phone call from Tuscon late last night. Her team placed well enough that they're going to Seoul, South Korea for the world finals May 31/June 1. I've already filled out the app. State Dept is running 4 weeks processing time right now, so I'll pay the extra $92.50 ($60 plus overnight fees) for 3-week expedited processing.

There are also some passport offices that will do the whole thing while you wait in about an hour or two. I know the office in Norwalk does that here in Connecticut. You're probably better off doing it through the expedited service above (never used it before, but heard good things about it) or through one of those offices.

My dad will probably have to use the service above when his current passport expires since he needs his passport for work every day. Congratulations to your daughter!!

That is very cool. She will like Seoul. It is a fine city and very safe. Lots of fun stuff to do, good food, great shopping. Hopefully she will get a chance to do some tours especially to the DMZ.

Congrats to your daughter Troy!

WRT expedited passports...my co-worker needed to expedite his due to our trip to Japan. He contacted his congresscritter and had the passport within a couple weeks without any additional fees attached. YMMV.

I don't trust those State Dept estimates, regardless of what service you use. I got my passport about a month ago. I paid the normal fees (no expedited service) and got the passport in about two weeks. One of my employees paid the expedited fees for a trip to Canada about two months ago and he got his passport 4 weeks later. My sister just renewed hers about 3 weeks ago, and she got hers in about two weeks as well. Not to suggest that you not pay the expedited fee, just know that the people at the passport office don't really know WHEN you'll get it.

And Troy, my sister used the post office on Mark IV and Meacham Blvd (Jack Watson PO I think is the name of the building) about mid morning on a weekday and was in and out in less than 20 mins. For some reason, that passport office doesn't show up on the Postal Service's list of offices that offer passport services.

That makes me nervous! Now what!? Maybe I should just use the link posted above to RushMyPassport.com...

Jack Watson was the one I planned to use... it's my "official" post office, and it was on the list when I searched for the 10 locations closest to zip 76137 today!

Next question... will she need a travel VISA? Shots?

Somebody raised that question of me and said that if she needs a Visa in 4 weeks, that's more problematic than a passport... and concluding a shot series might be too. Where do I find out what Korea requires?

For US Citizens:

Shots no. There is nothing special about South Korea. It is clean and safe like any other modern city.

VISA. A Visa is needed for work. I have one, they are good for 5 years but for what she is doing a tourist VISA aka just showing the passport at immigration, will suffice. She is not there for business. South Korea stamps her passport on entry and that stamp is a tourist VISA.

When she lands at Inchon she will have about a 1.4 mile walk to immigration. There she will stand in the foreigners line. She will have had to fill out a landing card which will be given to her on the plane. It just asks for name, DOB, citizenship, where is she staying and purpose of visit (Business or Pleasure). She will hand her passport and landing card to the immigration officer, who will take all of about 60 seconds to look it over stamp it and hand it back. She then goes down an escalator to get her bags. Once she gets her bag she goes through the green line at customs, showing her passport and is out into South Korea.

It is a simple straight forward process and place to go.

Scott is correct. Korea will be a piece of cake for her. I have the 5 year visa in my passport, as well, but it is only required for business. She won't need one.

When she gets back, ask her about kimchee (sp?). :D
