What's it worth

I'm sure the seller was optimistic too. So it's a wash.

He would pay college kids to cold-call every owner in the FAA registry within range of his Aztec. He'd offer them a low-ball price, then go to the bank and take out cashiers checks... one for 10%-15% lower than the offer, which was always followed up with a fax and standard wording that the aircraft must be "as described", and two or three more to make up the difference.

The guy was already making a low-ball offer by phone. The owners would agree to that price, then the guy would show up with a check for 85-90% of that low-ball offer that they'd already agreed to. That's sleazy.

Just think about buying an airplane from this guy. Yikes.

Yeah, you guys got it. He'd find distressed owners through cold-calling who wanted to sell. Often-times these aircraft weren't even listed as being For Sale anywhere. He played the numbers game, and hit people up who hadn't had a chance to list the aircraft, death in the family, illness, whatever. He'd make a low-ball CASH offer, show up, and only bring 80-90% of the cash.

He was really sleazy. Like I said, I found three aircraft for him and never saw a paycheck. Then when I found out what he was doing after we found the aircraft, I walked. I was a young, starving, aviation college student back then.

The most important lesson out of the whole thing? Sometimes a McJob is better than having an "aviation" job where stuff like that was going on.

The perspective buyer is making arrangements to have a look at the aircraft this week, and maybe make an offer, we are in the mind that it's better to spend a few bucks more on the price of an aircraft near home than try to find a lesser aircraft a long ways from home and spend the money chasing aircraft.

The next issue, came the aircraft be brought here or do we go see it.

It's a case of new student pilot I'm mentoring thru the buying process, and the PPL certificate process.
