What to do in Anchorage? (NA)

So I've known about this for a while now, but I'm just getting around to posting it. This afternoon I'm heading up to Anchorage, AK for a week for business! I'll have the day to waste away tomorrow, so I'll look for things to do then, but I'm also looking for places to go and things to do in the evenings (since I'll be working all day). Specifically, I'm looking for good local eating establishments and micro-breweries, as well as local sights to see.

Money is a bit tight for me lately, so keep that in mind when you make your suggestions (sadly, that means I won't be able to do my original plan for tomorrow, which was to go get some dual in an ASES). Any other suggestions?
 
I'd suggest getting a few bottles of Alaska Amber and sitting at one of the picnic tables at Lake Hood and watch Airplanes come and go. Its good for a few hours of fun and remember it doesn't turn night till about 2400.

I'm thinkin' a visit to the Great Alaskan Bush Company as a local cultural experience is required but as always, YMMV.
 
I hear you can see Russia from a porch just north of Anchorage. You could go spotting rooskies ! ;)

Seriously though if you want to learn about the first peoples a good place to go visit is Eklutna Historical park. That is also where the oldest building in Anchorage, Russian Orthodox Church, resides.

Of course the zoo has a good native animal collection. So that could be fun too.
 
Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! My plan for tomorrow is to sleep in, then go rent a bicycle and do one of the tours of Anchorage that they offer. Then, I think I'll take Barb's suggestion and go seaplane spotting for a while.

I haven't been to Anchorage since I worked for the Navy in the late 1970s. You've got the right initials for a place we visited a couple of times. :D I wonder if it is still in business.
 
The best thing to do in Anchorage is to get out of it and see Alaska!

If you can't do that the bar at the Millennium Hotel is where Barb was talking about, to watch Lake Hood traffic.

If the weather is nice (as it is right now) the roof bar at the Snow Goose Brewery on West Third downtown is really nice. You can watch a lot of military traffic on final to Elmendorf if they are playing that day.
 
The Alaska Native Heritage Center Museum is an excellent couple of hours.
