What is it like working a Monday to Friday 9 to 5 office job?

I farm in Louisiana, my work schedule varies considerably throughout the year depending on the weather and what is happening with the crop. I love what I do and having my job change every few weeks between planting, irrigating,harvestin... But with that being said the frustrating part is in the winter when I have a lot of time off my friends are usually working and in the summer when my friends take their vacation time and go to the lake on the weekends and things I'm working 80 hours or more a week. So I spend part of my year wondering why anyone would want to be stuck inside working in one office and part of the year wishing I had the predictable schedule of an office job with predictable days off. Part of the reason I'm getting into flying is I can get off for 24 or 36 hours in the summer with a rain, and driving somewhere takes too long.

That is exactly the value GA gives us, too.

We usually can't be gone overnight -- it's just too hard to hire overnight staff. Without GA, we would be stuck on our island, with no escape.

With GA, we can zip up to Austin for the day, and be back in time to say goodnight to our day staff. GA, in addition to being an essential business tool, has likely saved our sanity.

While in college, I worked full time as a software developer to pay for school, as well as my flying. One job was straight out of Office Space, while the other was at a game development studio and much, much cooler. I though both jobs were fun. I was still young and making pretty good money (for my age), so perhaps I was more resilient against stupid office politics and that sort of thing. When you don't have the pressures of family and adult problems, you can put up with a lot more BS.

I fly for a living now, so the lifestyle is very different. It works for me and I enjoy what I do, but I can see the advantages of a reliable 8-5 job. The big thing to me is that a M-F schedule is more aligned with the vast majority of everyone else. Who am I going to find to join me for a happy hour on a Tuesday afternoon? It wasn't a problem in my 20s, but now that I'm deep into my 30s and everyone is having kids, it's a little harder. As a result, most of my other friends are pilots too.

Meh - different strokes for different folks.
