What did you learn today?

I learned my keyboard no longer has several letters on it. Also learned I didnt need to look at the keyboard until I learned they were missing. Now I'm lost.

If you don't look down you won't fall.

I learned the difference in cost between low end cabinets and high end cabinets is not as much as you would think. Buy once, cry once.

one does not want to learn the hard way about the difference between a hack installing cabinets and a craftsman installing cabinets.

I was once told: "a smart man will learn from his mistakes and a wise man will learn from a smart man..".

My father use to say, "spend your money right the first time so there isn't a second time.."

one does not want to learn the hard way about the difference between a hack installing cabinets and a craftsman installing cabinets.

Why just the other day I was trying to explain this.. needles to say, the better advice would have been to not stand behind and face an airplane to pee when the prop is spinning..

"Sometimes ya just gosta let stupid be stupid.."

I learned that California actually does have chipmunks.

I mean, like, they have hella squirrels. Totally.

That grabbing a temperature probe that's been in the 500° smoker, is vastly different than sticking a thermometer into it and pulling it out after getting a stabilized reading.

That's not a smoker, that's a kiln.

If you are smoking meat at 500 degrees, I think there may be other learning ahead of you as well.

I think you may have mean "incinerator."
We got a Masterbuilt XT on sale over the weekend. Tri tip went in at 225º until the internal temp was 115º. Then pulled the meat out while I cranked the temp up to 500º. Placed back in and seared on one side until internal temp was 130º. Then when I went to flip it to sear the other side until 140º internal, I grabbed hold of the two temp probes, pulled them out, and instantly regretted it.

Somethings you only have to learn once.

Once when I was younger I baked a pizza. Pulled the pan out of the oven, grabbed the pizza cutter, then the pan...with the hand that was not in an oven mitt. Blistered several of my fingertips instantly. Just a painful brain fart.

On the other hand it is much harder to get a good set of fingerprints from that hand.

When I took welding shop in high school, I watched my buddy Ricky weld two pieces of metal together with an arc welder, lift up his welding helmet, pull off his gloves, then pick up a chipping hammer with one hand the piece of steel with the other.

I like learning from the mistakes of others. If nothing else, you get to laugh at them.

Aren't all welders arc welders?

Last year I fixed up our old engine drive that had sat since 2008. Decided I need an engine drive to run on propane to put on a mobile cart.

I only buy trailblazers because it has dual auxillary power. Can use 120/240 and stick weld simultaneously. Rather than mig weld I hooked up a suitcase feeder. But some of the switches took a bit to figure out. Wasn't 100% I wired it correctly after being apart, since I wasn't the one that opened it up the last time.

I'm an idiot. I was testing it out in shorts. The suitcase I couldn't get below 27 volts. Nuc-u-lar. Absolutely fried my legs. Seriously cooked from the arc flash. Could barely walk.

Anyone want some jerky?

No. We also did acetylene welding in that class. Had Ricky been using gas, I might have written "with an acetylene torch" rather than writing "with an arc welder" but I probably should have just omitted the type of welding process since it obviously caused such confusion and misunderstanding about the story.

Next time, rather than just referring to arc welding, I'll be sure to clarify whether the process was SMAW, MIG, TIG, etc., straight or reverse polarity, type of rod (6010, 6011, 7018, etc.) if stick welding, type of shielding gas if used, and so forth. Obviously such details are important to understand exactly how Ricky burned the hell out of his hand by having a brain fart and grabbing hot metal.

Was it E7024? Inquiring minds want to know!

LOL!

If I recall correctly, we almost always burned 6010 rods, but that was back in the summer of 1976, so my memory may be a tad fuzzy on that point. I recall spending more time learning gas than arc.

Ah, welding class. I took it in high school. Teacher does a demonstration. Fills a ballon with oxygen and lights it off, not much happens. Does the same with just acetylene, big puff of black smoke. Then both. He tells someone to open the door to the room and then lights it off. Kaboom!! So one day there’s a big Kaboom. Some student let his booth get filled and struck the igniter. He comes out of the booth and the teacher goes up to him and is yelling at him. Only he wasn’t really yelling, just moving his lips. The student yells, “my god, I can’t hear.”

So how long until your hearing returned.??

That I'm not the only one confounded by signs that prohibit backing in to parking spaces.

Picked up new glasses and noticed the frames were made in France. I found it strange that we import frames from France.

I learned I'm more risk averse than my sister's new boyfriend. He's an instrument student. They flew across lake Michigan, the last 15 minutes in imc and kept on sending.

But he hasn't accidentally shot and killed any of his friends, so that's progress.

I thought I lost my hearing in my right ear after an acetylene bomb went awry. Was probably 6 months and the tinnitus actually went away

I learned I can use a pizza slicer to cut up a steak a lot easier than trying to use a knife with my bum hand thereby reducing the chance of losing my own blood.

Thats a life hack I might have to try out even with 2 able thumbs.

plus you have incentive to have a really tender piece of steak. a bonus!

1. The city Truckee was named after a Paiute Indian phrase that means "all okay."

2. The infamous DG is a Facebook friend of a pilot friend.

3. The black cat is in serious need of a claw trim.

4. The first aid kit needs to be stocked with more band aids.

Not sure what I should have learned, but I suspect it’s something scary about my wife and daughter when they packed this up for another daughter.

I learned that a blown capacitor can do a really good impression of a seized motor.

I also learned that I was going to have several thousand more dollars in my bank account at the end of the day than I had expected to. Phew.

I learned that there’s a lot about dealing with a new puppy that I forgot over the years. And that small children can be just as obstinate and insistent. But I love them all and will not drown any of them.
