- - - to Wiscasset, ME KIWI. Will some of you fly-in, too?
After my boating return from Boothbay Harbor the other day I had docked at the float to clean salt spray off the boat, and to offload camera gear to my truck rather than chance transporting it via Zodiac inflatable from the mooring. Later, as I was setting the mooring I heard some sudden and LOUD sounds. Looking up I saw two well-decorated planes that were low, loud, and fast. And they were in formation flight. Damn! And my camera gear was ashore in the truck.
I had a hunch and it was later confirmed that the two a/c were on an advance practice for the Texas Legends Airshow coming up on Aug. 13 and 14 at KIWI. Ocean Point Aviation's David Stapp confirmed that only two of the collection of a/c to come north were sent to scope out the locale. My mooring on Sheepscot Bay is only 4 or 5 nm from KIWI. A couple more maneuvers and they were gone: low, loud, fast, and SUDDENLY in a steep climb.
Ironically, yesterday I was visiting my daughter who lives near Augusta. She told of an event a few days before. She and a friend were driving in the Richmond area which is about ½ way between Wiscasset and Augusta. She said they saw a single airplane come down "toward the power lines and we thought it was in trouble. Then it went into a climb." My guess is that it was one of the planes I had seen.
