The original "I don't know it all" of aviation.
This spring, the club added USB charging ports to the Skylane. As a result, I'm flying with at least one charging cable plugged in between the USB port and my iDevices.

Recently, I've noticed static white noise breaking the squelch the radios. A bit of unplug / replug testing has me considering it's the charging cable I use. And some online research has suggested that I obtain a shielded cable to eliminate the RF interference.

Does anyone have a source for a reasonably priced one? Preferably 3ft or 6ft long?

The only one I have found so far is this one from LoneStarAviation.com for $99.00, which is more than I want to spend.

Applying Google-fu isn't working well as the search returns lots of charging cable choices, but none that are a shielded design.

Any help from the PoA masses?

Are you sure it's the cable and not the regulator that's driving the USB port?

Have not considered that. I just know that when the cable is not in play (disconnected at both ends), the problem goes away.

If they used a switching regulator, which most do, it's most likely the port. Ideally they would have used a linear regulator but the problem then is excessive heat generation...

If I were to get make/model of the device, would that answer this question.

But for the moment, let's focus on the original question before we head off into tangents unknown.

Maybe.

I'm pretty sure all lightning cables are shielded. The one for my iPhone has shielding, I've damaged the outer jacket and there is an inner metallic shield...

The USB port is certified. It should not be the port. I could be wrong. It happens all the time.

FYI to the others, TexAg93 is a co-owner of the Skylane mentioned in first post of this thread and has the receipts of the install

Brian, are you hearing the white noise static when using your cables?
