Wal-Mart: "Oops!"

There are some things I like about Wal-Mart but those mostly rest with its founder, Sam Walton. He's long gone and pretty much has his style of customer service since today's store has gone so far down hill.

For all those years, a video production company taped Wal-Mart meetings and other activities. Two years ago, the agreement was broken and it ended. It was an oral agreement and not a word in writing. Now, it's coming back to haunt the retail giant.

Right, so I don't shop there anyway, under normal circumstances. But I'm not going out of my way NOT to either. :)

...and it's not that corporate hires the brightest bulbs on the grid. When I sold out my camera store I lasted about 10 weeks before I was bored stiff from all that free time on my hands. So, maybe a part time job? I did the 45 minute "Fill out the application at the kiosk" routine. About a week later I received a call to come for an interview. I went at the appointed hour, had to wait about 40 minutes for the HR(no pun here) manager who then told me that she was busy and that the General Manager would be out to interview me. In about 30 minutes the GM appeared -- fat and sloppily-dressed. I know that casual may be vogue but whatever happened to upper management's shirt, tie, and maybe a jacket. I was presented the opportunity but I had other calls to make. And Wal-Mart wouldn't be my last stop.

You'd think so, but then I went into a K-Mart yesterday. In comparison, Wal-Mart really has their act together!

And there's one thing Wal-Mart does get right: Consistency. I can go anywhere in the country and Wal-Mart will have room for me to park, and they'll have the ink cartridges for my printer, and they'll have... Well, you get the point. As much as I hate them, they do save me time.

Since Sears bought K-Mart or the other way 'round it's been one stop suckage. I think both sides are depressing.

I go into the Sears Hardware and Appliance store and there are 4-5 middle age guys up front shooting the sh* and barely another customer in the place, although I will admit did ask what I needed and pointed me to right place.

The fairly new downtown Chicago Sears store is the same drab beige and industrial metal as they all were in 1961.

The nearby Super K-Mart is super sucky. More biege. More chaotic shelves.

They just will not get it.

I'll choose Tar-jay if I have to choose any. At least they can afford to buy carpet.

That's why I like the new Target, which for some reason they built next to the Wal-Mart. The Wal-Mart has easier access off the road and I have shopped there since it was new but now I've mostly switched to Target. I really like their grocery section, of all things. Me, I don't mind being part of the unwashed masses...

You clearly do not live in Castle Pines. :)

Where did they put a Target down that way? I can picture a Wal-mart down arouind Parker.

The Wal-Mart is in Parker, at the intersection of Hilltop Road. The Target is just west of it. They've done a whole bunch of building in that area in the past 5 years.
 
What amazes me is that, what - ten years back?? Wally world couldn't wave the American flag high and fast enough. Buy American! They said it often...and were "Proud" to sell American goods.

Now, much like others here, I won't shop there and won't let my wife.

But my friends that do tell me everything is Chinese imports...

Buy American, huh?

Wal Mart has been the death of small family owned businesses in America.

Wal-Mart has gone down hill something awful since Sam Walton died. It's far from the same company.

Wal-Mart sells a lot of the same brands that other stores sell, of course they may be Chinese imports too. I don't ever check.

Plus if you're driving cross country, you can always securely sleep in their parking lot regardless of what you are driving or towing, you will never be hassled. That was one of Sam Walton's policies. He was a nice guy and a supporter of GA. I met him one day when he flew into Harrison AR (himself as pilot) in an old straight tail beautifully kept 182. He used that plane to loiter over towns and observe the traffic patterns to figure out where to put a new store. We chatted for a bit over a half an hour over coffee, he was a real gentleman. It is sad what has happened to the company since his passing.
 
I'd sooner take a hole-punch to my eyelid than shop at the local Walley-world. Yuck!
