3 planes forced to land after violating airspace over Obama's home

At least three single-engine planes violated a temporarily restricted flight area apparently set up over the area this past weekend for President Barack Obama's return to Chicago, according to the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Maj. Mike Humphreys declined to say specifically that the restricted area was being enforced for the president's visit or how large the area is but said that, in general, the zones are put in place for various reasons including "POTUS movements."

...

In the most recent incident -- which was posted on NORAD's Facebook and Twitter pages -- a Cessna 152 flew about two miles into the restricted space about 8:55 p.m. Sunday before two F-15 fighter jets and an HH-65 Dolphin Coast Guard helicopter intercepted the plane and escorted it to the Lewis University Airport in Romeoville.

In another incident Saturday morning, Humphreys said, another Cessna 152 "barely encroached" into the restricted area and was met by a Dolphin helicopter and escorted to Schaumburg Airport.

On Friday night, two F-15s escorted an RV-8 model plane that had flown into the restricted area to Aurora Municipal Airport.

Guess somebody needs to tell the FAA about gving away secrets.

It sounds like some of these were the short notice "HE'S MOVING!" TFRs and how could we not know about those?

So if don't avoid the unpublished moving zone you will be intercepted.:mad3:

This whole situation just gets dumber and dumber. For some reason the one thing I was hoping "Change" would actually, well, CHANGE, were these idiotic POTUS no-fly zones.

Guess not...

To me, it seems like they're spending about the value of the plane that is to be intercepted on the intercept mission. C152 is probably around $30k, and 2 F-16s flying around for 1 hour is probably at least as much.

Just show up in a really expensive plane. It'll bankrupt them

They have, actually. Just not enough. R

(yes, I understand what they intended to say ;) )

Up in the far NW parts of the Chicago Metro area our flight for life people grounded themselves because they thought that they too were affected by the TFR. Of course air ambulances are not and we are outside of the TFRs. There is a bit of a bruhaha now going on by the local politicos to question why such large TFRs are needed. I doubt anything will come of this but it is good to see that non-pilots are questing this idiocy. Although I did see one letter that stated that all planes should be banned from flying over populated areas because they fall out of the sky at an alarming rate. SIGH.

Really? I had not heard about any changes to the POTUS no-fly zones. What has changed?
There are now ways for non part 121 flights to get into the 10Nm inner ring. That was first instituted the first time the President came to Chicago, and involves stopping at a specified outlying airport like Rockford, being vetted, and then given permission to fly. It was later used again at Martha's Vineyard.

And I will say that while flight training at our airport was down, it certainly didn't cease, and the flight school is putting the blame on a variety of factors, including instructors and students taking the holiday off. I know one instructor who went flying 10 times with students while the President was here; they just filed to outside the area and picked up their clearance before taking off. I know another who used it as an opportunity to do ground with his students.

But if you publish then wouldn't the terrorist will know where the POTUS is (within ~10nm)? Surly there's a terror network of FO's and C-150s ready to scramble. :dunno:
