Hello,

I presently have an S-Tec 50 in my Cessna 182R along with a basic Aspen and Garmin 430. I am wanting to upgrade the AP to something with altitude pre-select, etc so will a 55x suffice or should I spend the extra $$$ and go to the 3100?

Also... is there much install work that needs to be done (servos, etc) to install the new unit?

Good Afternoon,

There is an unlock available from Aspen to integrate with your 55X and will give you mode annunciation and altitude pre-select with out additional hardware.

For the 182R the S-TEC 3100 autopilot would be an excellent option, especially since you are upgrading from a 55X. For the owners who currently have an S-TEC autopilot installed, the upgrade price will depend on the equipment already installed. The 3100 AP would be an outstanding bargain to get the benefits of a fully integrated digital autopilot, especially considering the additional safety features which it will bring. The Upgrade from a 55X to a 3100 is a list price of $9,995 if you already have an S-TEC electric trim installed or $11,495 if you do not. That is a savings of $10,000! Along with the discount on the system you will also be getting a 2 year warranty on the new parts AND a 1 year warranty on your existing servos!

Genesys Aerosystems S-TEC 3100 is a fully featured, attitude-based autopilot that gives you a list of workload-reducing and safety-enhancing capabilities that were previously unavailable on aftermarket autopilots. Compatible with traditional steam gauges or advanced digital sources & EFIS displays from various manufacturers, the S-TEC 3100 delivers unmatched features and benefits:

· Precise, digital flight control for every phase of flight
· 2-axis (3-axis option on some models)
· Automatic Trim included
· Envelope Protection/Alerting*
· Straight and Level Recovery
· Precision Approaches/Missed Approaches
· Indicated Airspeed Hold*
· Altitude Preselect*
· And much more!
*Additional equipment may be required in some configurations

You will need to talk to an authorized S-TEC dealer to get a quote for the install. Do you already have an S-TEC dealer that you are working with?

Please let me know if I can provide any more information. Thank you.

We just went from a 55 to a 55X, the cost was limited to $800 for the box and $1500 to Genesys to get it re-programmed from a SR22 to a A36. We debated going to a 3100, but even re-using the existing servos it would have been a substantial increase in cost.
Get quotes on going 50 --> 55X and 50 --> 3100. You should be able to re-use the installed servos for both.

So what about an older 60-2 with altitude preselect (dial-a-number style)? Any benefits to upgrade, if mine is working fine? Cost?

Sorry for the hijack, figured since you got your answer in the first response from the company, your question was answered, so rather than starting a new post...

Sounds like your on a good track they have good support would like to hear about the 60-2

OP has 50 not 55

Thank you for the correction, In this case the 3100 would definitely be the best way to go, as there i a LOT of additional functionality. While the 55X is still a great autopilot option with lots of features, if we have a 3100 STC'd that is really the only way to go. The upgrade price from a 50 to a 3100 is $10,495 if you already have an S-TEC electric trim installed or $11,995 if you do not. You will get a 2 year warranty on the new parts and a fresh 1 year warranty on your existing servos, regardless of how old they are.

Your price to upgrade from the 60-2 is the same as the 50 to 3100 upgrade that I mentioned above, $10,495 or $11,995 depending on if you have a trim servo. You will notice a lot of improvement as far as it being an all digital attitude based system instead of it being a rate based analog system. You will get a smoother flight and additional features such as IAS mode, envelope protection (over speed, under speed, and over bank protection), a straight and level recovery button, built in digital altitude pre-select for a smoother level off, and more.

Please feel free to reach out to me to discuss your specific applications.

The 3100 is definitely the way to go where they have an STC for it, especially since it appears you're keeping the Aspen.
