Updating firmware on Electronic Flight Instrument

Ok, the FARs mention that updating databases is not considered preventive maintenance and owner/pilots can do that work. But it does not appear to mention firmware updates on EFI's like the G5, etc.

I haven't been able to find any information about whether an A&P is needed, the work needs to be logged, or any related topic. Anybody have information on this topic?

All I know is that in order to have the firmware updated on my 530W, I HAD to have it done by an authorized dealer. There was no option for me to do the update myself. I did get a log book entry for this.

Garmin make the updates for the G5 generally available. The maintenance manuals don't call it out either way, but they don't make the information or the updates themselves difficult to find.
