Well I never thought I would see the day when unleaded fuel cost me more than 100LL. Gas went up to $2.89 today and 100LL is $2.85. Its now cheaper to fly than to drive.

The diesel has one tank full of diesel fuel, and a tank of vegetable oil so we can switch back and forth. I wish I had all diesel vehicles. Then again, the motorcycle will get 55 mpg...
SkyHog said:wait, are you saying you can run a diesel engine off of vegetable oil?

Time to get serious about the waste oil to biodiesel conversion sysstem I've been looking at occasionally, I think.
alaskaflyer said:Yep. We run buses on it here, as well as large generators (when we aren't experimenting with fish oil, the bears love that!)
I really think that diesel powerplants will "save" the small GA aircraft for t
he future.

HPNFlyGirl said:Could you use 100LL in your car?
fgcason said:Yes you could. But you might want to consider how much a new catalytic converer will cost before doing so.
HPNFlyGirl said:Not worth it then eh?
alaskaflyer said:Yes, my plane has an STC for avgas.
Yes, I plan on using it!

fgcason said:It was fully enclosed with a canopy. It ran on two wheels like a motorcycle and had 2 outriggers that sat down to keep it from toppling over at stops.
AirBaker said:We just ditched our '04 Tahoe for gas reasons. We got a honda accord V6 coupe instead. We're now much happier to get 23mpg instead of 15mpg.
fgcason said:There was a motorcycle car prototype in the early 1980's that kind of looked like the front section of a jet fighter. 2 seats, cargo, small trailer option.
Bill Jennings said:I remember those, and recall them costing something like $60k each. $60k buys a LOT of gas, even at $3/gallon.

Take it in for smog and see.
It may be running, the O2 sensors take a while to foul. Just one tank will reduce their efficiency and reduce the fuel efficiency of the engine. But garanteed, they will fail if one persists in running leaded fuel, the FI computer will get tired of the bad readings and light the dreaded CEL. (check engine light)
Trucks, of which the Jeep is classified, don't have as strict emissions standards as cars do.
There are ways to "tune" the firmware in the computer around the smog test and the CEL.
AirBaker said:Again, no check engine lights on the Jeep.
However, the CEL is on in the Lexus due to bad O2 sensors. They've been on for the past 8000 miles, no worse efficiency so far.
I am no disputing the theory, but in practice it seems to be A-OK.
