Torn meniscus surgery - yea or nay

Runners and cyclists often do not get along on the road; I never liked them  (had numerous bad experiences on the road). But now, I cannot believe I am actually going to take a look into biking (not those fast moving road biking though, it does not seem that safe around here on NYC area roads; I may be able to keep my knees but get run over by a bus ).

I've put thousands and thousands of miles on my road bike over the past 10 years and have never had a conflict with a runner. But the caveat is I ride almost exclusively on roads. I wouldn't ride a road bike in NYC either, but I'm sure good roads are just a quick train ride away. Or you could ride on the multi use trails, just watch out for the runners, I hear they are cranky. ;)

Ah...well yes...bicycling in New York City is likely to be different than here in northern Minnesota.

Nope! No way!! Absolutely Not!!! Never, ever will I wear one of those sausage casing-like, tight-fit crazy-colored graffiti outfits!! I must draw a line there

I'm straight, I wear bicycling shorts, all it took was one bad experience with saddle sores, with a two week recoup period before they were gone to make me a believer. If you're looking at and thinking about my shorts you may have a touch of the gay, which is fine, you know, not judging, but neither should you.

Yeah...my wife reminds me that I’m now too old for spandex. So I prefer baggy shorts, but my underwear is definitely padded.

I'd prefer the baggy shorts too, unfortunately getting on and off the road bike and catching the baggy leg on the seat sent me into lycra land. But I can sit on the bike for 8 hours (when I'm trained up for that) with no saddle sores. Of course everything else hurts, but that's another story.

Are you telling me those expensive bikes don’t come with “comfort ride” cushy saddles?

I’ll do a long ride, come home beat and exhausted, heart rate at 85% of max for 90% of the ride but the only thing that hurts is my ***.

Dad spent 30 years with Arnold, Schwinn & Co. (later Schwinn Bicycle Company), and I've been a recreational cyclist all my life starting at age 6. At 78 I still ride three or four times a week locally and a couple of weekends a month I'll put in 100 or 150 miles "credit card touring" to keep in shape. Sonoma County is great cycling.

We’ve drifted pretty far off topic, but...

...as a preventive measure I always apply some lotion (Nivea cream or equivalent) to my nether regions* before any ride.

An ounce of prevention and all that.

*OK. I know that’s a softball. Have fun!

We’ve drifted pretty far off topic, but...

I say it again, I am very appreciative of your thread FastEddieB!

It was not my intent to hijack your thread. But, because of your thread, I am getting some excellent advice from fellow members here. So, please excuse me, and thank you for your thread at the same time.

Eddie, I had my knee scoped on Friday. Today, Wednesday, I’m walking fairly normally pain free except the incisions. Easy peasy. Go get fixed.

You must have skipped over a few posts!

Got “fixed” on June 2. 3 week follow up today.

Somehow, “getting fixed” doesn’t sound real appealing!

Had my follow up Wednesday.

They took out the two stitches, checked range-of-motion and watched me walk. No physical therapy needed. Any physical activity I can tolerate is authorized, including cycling, with the general admonition to “take it easy” for a while. They want to see me one more time in a month.

After being pain free for a couple weeks, I had a week or so with a really tiny dull ache and/or an occasional twinge from the same area. Probably from overdoing it a bit with yard work and tractor maintenance and the like. They said that was perfectly normal.

Anyway, my United Healthcare plan includes a free gym membership. Will probably start with light leg curls, leg extensions and leg presses. I think at this point too light is better than too heavy, so I’ll try to behave myself! Probably alternate that with easy bike rides to start.

Again, thanks for the advice and support - it really helped.

Good news!

I applaud your attention to your legs. Good quadriceps strength is the most important contributor to knee health.

Last week I went to the gym and did very light leg extensions and leg curls, mainly concentrating on range-of-motion. Then slightly heavier calf raises and leg presses. Following day rode my mountain bike up and down the runway once to see how it felt.

Since that felt fine, I ventured out on the road today for the first time...

Just 6 miles in about half an hour trying to stick to relatively flat roads. Felt fine, and I’m eager to up the mileage and hit the hills again, but need to pace myself.

Anyway, enough of the progress reports - I’ll just check back in if something untoward happens.
