I'm going to release an aviation iPhone application that will have some templates based on common aircraft. What should those aircraft be?

Is there some list out there sorted by the number of each model in the current fleet? That way I could add the most common aircraft.

Hmmm.

The highest-priority "gotta haves" are 172, 182, PA28-180 & 181, Bonanzas of all stripes, Barons, Seneca...

Go here select MultiModelSelect, and it is easy to check-box the most popular types, then complete the search. You will get 10 pages or so of types, enumerate manually in about 3 minutes.

What kind of app? I'd love to see a replacement for the checklist app from foreflight. They have a "free one" but it is pretty useless - who can type on the iphone? I'd write one myself if i wasn't so busy on other ventures...

From the FAA registry database (didnt filter destroyed or expired reg's, but I imagine its not more than a substantial amount, and should be similar across all mfr/models):

Thank you - that's a big help.

Jesse, also if you haven't used it yet, the TCDS is very useful in setting up the W&B calcs. The CG ranges, and arms can be found here without having to find online versions of the AFM.

Aztec, 310, Baron...

I can help with the first two. :)

Think about who's going to use it. Will it be of much use to Cessna 140 drivers, or Aeronca drivers??? You may want to consider users, as well as numbers. That would argue for including Mooneys, at least the 201.

Here's the typical Aeronca calculations:

W&B
Me?
Gas?
Good.
Go.

Speed
Am I passing cars or are they passing me? If former, fast, if latter, slow.

Endurance
Am I tired?
yes = land

:D That's more or less what I figured.

Off the top of my head, for your purposes you'll need to cover the many variants of things like 172's, Bonanzas, and Cherokees:

Beech: 23, Bonanza, Duchess, Travel Air, Baron
Cessna: 150/2, 170/2, 180/2, 205, 206, 210, 310
Cirrus: SR20, SR22
Diamond: DA20, DA40, DA42
Mooney: M20 (C, F, J and newer variants especially)
Piper: PA23, PA24, PA28, PA30/39, PA32, PA34, PA44

I don't think many of the 2-seat tube-and-fabric crowd are going to use your app.

Also, are you going to build in a way for those templates to be downloaded or even exchanged? Then you could introduce the app with just the 30 or so most popular variants of the various birds, and continue adding them later.
