My daughter is moving to Lincoln to attend grad school. My wife and I will be flying somewhat regularly from San Antonio to visit. Looking for thoughts on flying into KLNK. Our first trip will be Monday, July 28th to help her move in.

Being a joint use airport with the ANG, what might I expect as far as getting in and the mix with National Guard traffic? What instrument approaches does ATC typically assign? Anything to watch out for in particular?

Any comments on the two FBO's, Duncan and Silverhawk? We'll be needing to rent a car if that makes a difference...

Thanks!
Tom

I've been to the Lincoln airport once, at night. I was given a visual approach to runway 17. Approaching from the east, approach sent me to a point several miles north of the field, near the VOR, where they turned me in for a long final. Landing on that runway takes you right to the FBOs.

I used Silverhawk with no problems. I see on AirNav that they have a discount for the AirBoss card. You could phone them to find out how much that savings is, to decide if it's enough to justify buying an AirBoss card

There was no military activity at night when I arrived, but there were some airliners coming and going.

The Nebraska campus is nice. It looks like a lot of other midwestern university campuses, except that it is a little nicer than some. Someone who judged Nebraska solely by driving across the state on I80 might be surprised. I hope your daughter likes it there.

My home airport. Silver hawk is probably more ga friendly. Have couple courtesy cars and can get you discounts on rooms. One of the easier class c airports to get in or out. On instrument approach they will probably give you vectors. Very easy. If you want car rental silver hawk will set that up for you also. Call ahead if possible. You can ask for about any approach you want.

I'm a charter pilot for silverhawk. JuLee and the other girls at the front desk will take care of you. The courtesy cars are in good condition or they can set you up easily with a rental considering you'll be visiting for longer than an hour or two.

A few good things to know. Lincoln Approach is controlled by Omaha. They clumped it all together a year or two ago and now Lincoln and Omaha is called Omaha approach despite being two separate sets of airspace.

You may eventually be asked to do the "Pawnee Approach/arrival." This is not published anywhere. It's a locals VFR procedure. It's designed to keep you above the big boys in the pattern. All you do is fly to the lake (pawnee lake) directly west of the field at 3,500 ft then fly east to the intersection of the airport. Once you're past runway 36, you either report passing 36 or you'll get further clearance. If you opt not do this and the KC-135s are in the pattern, you'll get vectored to heck and back. If you're confused, just ask on how to do it.

They've been closing runway 36 and 32 to work on the runways. I think they're doing something to the light system but not sure. Unless the winds are strong, 9 out of 10 times you'll get runway 35/17 unless doing an instrument approach. On average, anything bigger than a gulfstream doesn't use that runway.

There's a bunch of POAers in Lincoln. Speak up if you need anything!

17-35 is where they send most "small airplane" traffic. And more often than you'd think airplanes cleared to land on that runway line up on 18-36 because the longer runway stands out visually and makes 17-35 look like a taxiway.

IOW make sure you set up for the runway you're assigned to.

Nothing special about flying into LNK. Very easy airport. As Lance says, just don't confuse 17/35 and 18/36 (which you shouldn't since one is twice as large as the other).

Anywhere but Duncan. If Duncan is your only choice, land somewhere else.

I had a bad experience years ago that still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That is officially the first complaint I've heard about Duncan in the seven years I've flown out of LNK.

I'm with Jesse. First I've heard of any issues in 12 years flying in the Lincoln area. Did you give them a chance to make it right?
