Time's top ten cinematic flops

How did "The Cell" not make the list?

At least Gigli did.

Remember it's not the worst movies of all times. It's the biggest money losers (flops) of all time.

If it were the worst movies of all time it would have many stallone movies in it.

Stop or my mom will shoot
Tango and Cash
Cobra

I rest my case :D

Ouch!

Though PH broke even domestically, it did pretty well overseas (so much for the superiority of European culture -- the same people who made the Hof such a star..)

:loco:

Try watching Catwoman on a full stomach.
You'd think Halle Berry as Catwoman in tight leather would work, but not so much.

I still nominate The Core as one of the worst. So bad it's good.

  • Space shuttle goes 130 miles off course and NASA finds out about when the pilot sees the LA coastline.
  • IDK why the shuttle pilot/navigator(?) has a sectional, but if so, why pass 2 long big airports (LAX & LGB )
  • Rotating lasers w/ ultrasonics, uber strong unobtainium, some sort of xray vision that sees through 10' of lead, & giant diamonds. yes, diamonds the size of small hills.
  • of course, the sci-fi requisite stupid army brass guys who runs one of the most technical orginizations in the world, but can't graps scientific concpets unless dumbed down 10x over.

They left out Moulin Rouge. The list is inaccurate. Nothing was more painful than Moulin Rouge. :raspberry:

To bring theis thread back to an aviation theme....

Best and worst aviation movies?

Best: Flight of the Phoenix (Original version with Jimmy Stewart)
Worst:Flight of the Phoenix (Remake)

:D

For worst one has to consider "Snakes on a Plane", "Airport-Sequals", and "Turbulence"

I haven't seen either so I'll take your word on that!!

(A snake-owning relative claimed all they needed to do on the plane was turn down the temps -- or was that busted on the snakeplane?)

I despise/loathe/hate/retch/vomit/spew Top Gun.

"Snakes on a Plane" was was Ed Woodian in it's badness, therefore making it funny again. Soul Plane on the other hand was just plane awful.

Oh, you mean movies about aviation, not movies we've seen on a plane (in which case the list would be pretty long).

Like the man said, its a flop when cost is greater than revenue. Waterworld and Stealth weren't bad movies by any stretch, but they each cost a mint and didn't make much. The rest of those were reportedly pretty bad.

What I don't get is how they assume $2 gross - $1 cost = $1 profit. The film producers only get 90%(?) of the box office the first week and it goes down each week from there.

The theaters make thier money on popcorn, cokes, and candy and video games.

I endured "Big Momma's House" on a flight to Munich.

Good. Lord.

I wonder if they ever showed Airport/Airport '75/Airport '77/Airport '79 as an inflight movie????

Sorta reminds me of the story my parents told me when they were on a sailboat in a storm on Lake Michigan, and they decided to go see a movie after getting to port. The only thing playing was "The Poseidon Adventure"

I saw JAWS the Friday before we left for the beach.

That summer NO ONE was in the water...

:rolleyes2:

...but surely you were forced to see that??

Something is more painful than Moulin Rouge. Moulin Rouge from the first row because the theater was full.

You still get to enjoy the deep, deep thoughts of Bernie Taupin.

"anyway, what I mean is, ...."

...

I had to kill time so I walked down to the Biograph and saw "Austin Powers Goldmember" all by myself in the theater. I sat through it. Somehow I don't think there would have been any laughs in that room even if thrre were others there, barring chemical influences.

I liked Pearl Harbor. I also liked Wild Wild West -- but I was young -- and the cheesiness probably wasn't noticeable (12 years old).

Well Wild wild West DID have Selma Hayek running around in a corset IIRC, so that improved the movie markedly :D

Before getting my instrument rating, I diverted to SYR instead of
going thru IMC to get home. The FBO let me watch some tapes while
waiting to decide what to do (wait, fly, or stay overnight). My choice was
"Trains, Planes, and Automobiles."

Tin Man was not one of Sci-Fi's Saturday night specials, but was a featured miniseries. Another notable miniseries was Battlestar Galactica. The usually roll one out around the holidays, and the majority have been very good.

The made for Sci-Fi Channel movies are among the worst imaginable.

Hey, where else will you see a giant shark jump out the water and snatch a plane (not on final, but freak'in cruise). Or better yet the shark doing 500 kts (yes, 500 underwater) underwater towards the west coast?

And experience the AWESOME acting talents of Lorenzo Lamas to boot :D

You know what grinds my gears? No? Well i'll tell ya. People who get movies confused with documentaries. The movies are for entertainment purposes only. If they happen to be accurate, then good on 'em. If not, don't spend the $10+ admission thinking you are going to learn something. It is that very reason I haven't and never intend to see the Transformers movies. The AWACS scenes are so inaccurate they drive me nuts. After the Wacker cameo in Independance Day I chose to watch movies for the amusment value and nothing more.

Yea there is a suspension of disbelief a movie is given. But, sometimes they go too far without good enough dialog/plot devices for as far as they stretch.

Example 1:
Start @ 2:00

When the factual errors are so gross you know the filmmaker either didn't care enough or figured the audience wouldn't care.

For example -- in Patton all the tanks are US make, 1960's vintage. They painted the Germans, the US green.

George C. Scott spoke with a deep, gravelly voice, while Patton had a high pitched voice. The opening speech cleaned-up Patton's actual words.

There are also a few other small deviations from fact, and omissions that would have portrayed Patton differently.

Yet the film remains a great film, not necessarily a documentary on Patton, as it shows a great performer providing an insight into a complex historical figure.

So even trivia "experts" can suspend criticism when its obvious the filmmakers were trying to get the overall story right.
