Tie Downs when traveling

At BJC the chain is attached to a steel cable that is staked periodically to the ramp. There is a reasonable amount of give in the system even though the chains themselves won't.

That's how chains are supposed to be installed. If they're not, they're not a properly engineered tie down system.

And you're not supposed to leave the cable lying on the ground slack, you're supposed to pre-tension it by lifting it with your foot before attaching the chain. Leaving it lying on the ground leaves too much slop in the system and airplanes will hop up and down.

But I'd understand how things will get damaged if the chain system isn't used properly.

I suppose there's a significant number of "chain noobs" who teach others incorrectly, and we end up with a tragedy of the commons where people think a properly engineered chain tie down system is something they won't utilize, because "someone they know" damaged their airplane and blamed it on the chain system.
