Too small. There is only one truly "terminal" degree.
The advise I have on going for the PhD is to keep matters in your own hands. You may sign on for a particular prof's question but you must make it your own.
I was fortunate in that I got to work on my own question so the only doubt was when had I answered enough of it. It's rare that a question is ever fully answered at this level.
