I saw this on the ramp at my home drome today. Not sure how long the aircraft has been parked there, but long enough to acquire a squatter! Gave me a chuckle.

I left my 172 without cowl plugs overnight, the next morning I had a full nest throughout the engine compartment. Never saw anything develop that fast. The nest went all the way back to the firewall.

The waste no time.

I watched a starling with stick in his mouth land on the top of the vertical stab of what might have been a King Air (this was a long time ago). He was wanting to build a nest on top, but kept sliding down the leading edge. He kept flying back up and sliding back down for about 30 minutes and had that twig the whole time. He finally went somewhere else.

Does he have a TSO or field approval for that nest? I'd report him to the FSDO

Man that bird threw even the kitchen sink in there...even managed to gather the piece of debris that took down Air France's Concorde :goofy:

Why I wish my 172 had big clamshell cowl doors like this C-170A, or the Cheetah, Bonanza or Cherokee 140 I used to own ...

The dot-matrix paper feed was a nice touch. This is clearly a bird with refined taste.

Some bird made a nest in the behind the rudder of one of our turboprops, by the time we found it, well eggs don't do well in the flight levels.

I found three separate nests under my cowling. Cleaned them out. Next day, all were back. Cleaned them out again. Next day, all were back again with eggs. Cleaned them out again and plugged the cowling with whatever rags and towels i had in my toolbox so I could ferry the plane out of the field the next morning. The little bastards are quick to to take up residence....

Found a half-a**ed attempt of a nest in my cowling inlet once. Not much space there to build a full nest.
Found a real nest in my neighbor's cowling last week. No eggs. Cleaned it out for him. I'll check again this weekend. :)

I was always joking with my CFI that I was going to bring in an old birds nest so she could put it in the engine cowl in the morning before she sent the student out for the pre-flight...

Might have to do that now...
