the "not worthy of it's own thread" thread

That looks like a lot of fun. I’ve never flown in a tail wheel before but definitely want to.

So, to become a real pilot, do you have to have the endorsement and all that, or does just flying one count? I got to ride along on an "after maintenance" lap around the pattern in a convential gear plane and I got to fly the pattern and taxi, but not take off and land. Does it still count? ;)

Landing is key. :)

So we went up in the cub today in 10G16 direct crosswind. Instructor only had to save me twice, though not major corrections. Toughest part was last 10AGL and then first 10 AGL on take off. Take off and landing rolls were solid, as was taxiing. I’m still over controlling a little, but it’s much better. After 3 landings my brain was toast… slow and steady wins the race I suppose.

Oh, and as it’s a clipped wing cub, power on stalls are super gnarly!

Taking off can be interesting if you have some good power on the nose and start whipping it too hard, too early in the roll ... :D
True. I just found landing a tail dragger way more challenging than taking off.

I'm not disagreeing with you at all. Landings can be real fun, especially these last few weeks when the wind continues to blow. I just wanted to point out that taking off in a tail dragger can be interesting as well. But I'm still a newbie tailwheeler so maybe it's just me ... :D

One thing you can do in some tailwheels on takeoff is keep the tail up to the point of keeping some weight on the mains before lift off. I like to do that a bit on takeoffs with gusts. If you're flying something with a long nose and big prop that might strike the ground, obviously don't do that. But on a normal J3, it's fine, even with little tires.

Oh man. I flew a Saratoga II HP (PA32R-301) last night.. I see the appeal. Super super nice.. comfy.. Flies so much better than the Arrows I've flown.

Also that IO540... drool... we had empty tanks and were doing [full] power on stalls - felt like a 40 degree deck up angle!

You should buy one.

I must have left my spare 400k in my other pants...

Forgive the metaphor but what you did is kind of like lusting after a woman that’s is way way out of your league. It can only bring pain and frustration. while you cling to some fantasy that something might actually happen

That's very impressive, indeed. Most people only do power-off stalls when the tanks are empty. :)

I believe he is renting this one, so it's more like a high priced escort.

@kaiser what's she rent for BTW? If mine gets delayed any longer I might need a fix.

My biggest issue is that my funding is all OpEx and no CapEx. [insert discussion around loans for toys, etc]. So I'm renting currently.

Haha - are there escorts that aren't high priced?

It's a rental. Trying to fulfill a mission that needs more space/useful load than the Cirrus (for a lot cheaper!). Hours in this also gets me complex+HP where as the Cirrus does not. Also, given the Cirrus is a leaseback and the owner has strict power setting instructions, they're both almost "the same speed". The 'toga is $285/hr wet.

Leaving the airport a few minutes ago as DUMPSTERS full of rain is starting to ease up just a bit….tornado warning comes on the radio just as Allegiant is taxiing to take off. Sumbiches took off sho nuff. No fooks given.

The passengers on that Allegiant flight must not have paid the $19 upgrade for a weather briefing. And/or the $29 upgrade for a sober pilot.

Flew Delta from Vegas back to ATL yesterday - pilot had to swing all the way south of Houston to miss that multi state line of snarky weather.

Quick PSA: even though you often fly in airspace where ADS-B is required, not everyone has it installed. So it would behoove you to tilt your head up every once in a while, look outside, and use your eyes for traffic avoidance ;)

That is all.
