The G-20 Comes to Pittsburgh...

I really and truly despise all this stupid, idiotic, ineffective, expensive, dangerous, moronic security crapola!

What the hell is G20, and why are airplanes impacted?

If its for foreign dignitaries, I will be outraged.

KPIT will close one runway for parking "Large aircraft."
KAGC will be to roost for "corporate sized aircraft"
KFWQ will host all the King Airs and helicopters.
Helicopters will shuttle all the "guests" to the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort (~50 nm south of Pittsburgh).

All this not a year after business was bashed for "fat cats riding around in jets..."

Which "fat cats" are these?

Every pilot that frequents those 4 airports should flood them with requests to fly between those 4 airports. Denied? Request again ad infinitum.

The G-20 is made up of the finance ministers and central bank governors of 19 countries:
  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Russia
  • Saudi Arabia
  • South Africa
  • South Korea
  • Turkey
  • United Kingdom
  • United States of America
The European Union, who is represented by the rotating Council presidency and the European Central Bank, is the 20th member of the G-20.

Short answer: Lots of "foreign dignitaries."

So why should I, or for that matter, any other American Citizen, give up more privledges so that foreign leaders can come here?

Sigh.

And why the hell does Monroeville need security clearance? It's a 2200' runway? No one is going to be landing any corporate stuff there.

Various "security" types have been crawling all over KFWQ lately.

Lots of helicopters, King Airs, "ballistic" sunglasses, and badges.

Oh, and it looks like there's about to be one over NYC and area for the UN meetings.

Gee, I sure hope AOPA actually does something other than notify pilots that there's a problem:

Now's AOPA's chance....impress me.

Nemacolin.... not bad digs for a summit. Glad to see they are going first class. Wonder if the entire resort is booked, would almost be worth the cost to book a night, and fly in their (Nemacolin's) own strip.

After what happened last spring in London, I'm not surprised they picked a more out-of-the-way location for this meeting.

I lived in Pittsburgh for about 9 months. Worked in consulting, so I traveled a lot. Still, I really liked the place.

That being said, the G20 folks are gonna say "We have to kill these terrorists, RIGHT NOW, if this is the kind of city we're going to meet in to avoid them!"

I they need such tight security they should meet in a cabin in Montana. Preferably in January. No terrorists will want to attack anyone, they have better sense.

:skeptical:

First, no one "lives" in Pittsburgh -- it's a commuter city. The closest residents are near the universities-- still in Pittsburgh city limits but a hike from dahntahn.

Pittsburgh's combination of city accessibility coupled with rural getaway that is the region's greatest asset.

That said, it's no Manhattan, but it sure beats Columbus.

:D

I recall, growing up, always reading about Pittsburgh being an industrial wasteland, walking on the Mon, the river burning, all that.

Imagine my shock when I first visited Pittsburgh, and all I could see was miles and miles of trees and what appeared to me to be a beautiful place.

It certainly was that -- yet some of the industrial effluvia still affects the surrounding areas.

The low point was Donora.

Here's a picture taken dahtahn mid-day:

I don't think there is a city that offers a skyline view more beautiful than looking over the golden triangle at sunset from Mount Washington - even seeing St. Louis with the sun setting through the Gateway Arch isn't as pretty as Pittsburgh. Sucks that the G-20 is making things so restrictive.

Last time I was in Pittsburgh we stayed in a suburban hotel. We wanted to go into town but found the one and only freeway closed for the weekend. We have no plans to return.

The view after you get out of the tunnel sure is pretty though.

My mailing address and city wage tax bill would claim otherwise, although, in truth, I was almost in Greentree.:) Stupid me picked the expensive side of the street. Still, I could be downtown in 8 minutes. Not too shabby.

No, I like Pittsburgh. Nice place.

I flew our approach into PIT tonight behind a Heavy Boeing with Russian registration. Definitely not your average day around here.

Funny you should say that. As we were driving to the airport last week, the CA and I both commented on how much the area around the PIT airport looks like the area around the STL airport. I have yet to ever land in PIT during daylight hours, but it seems like a nice area.

Except for no straight roads, undulating terrain as far as you can see, and a really poor Baseball team.

(Though the football and hockey teams sorta make up for that!)

Oakmont more than makes up for any other shortcomings.

Pity. Time was when cities clamored for things like this for the increased visibility and revenue. Can't stop progress.

Why Chicago wants the Olympics I do not know. Oh, wait, they'd be happy if little planes go away altogether.

Not likely. A better guess would be more patronage jobs and contracts for a mayor with a low approval rating. But right now the odds are that Chicago will NOT get them. The announcement is on the 2nd of Oct and I am hoping that they do anywhere but Chicago.

Well I didn't say they were exactly alike!

True, because Pittsburgh and St Louis have.... well... roads. And Buildings. And the natives mostly speak English.

Whad I miss?

:D

Both founded by the French, right? Pittsburgh was originally "Ft. Duquesne," and "St. Louis" speaks for itself. Both critical hubs in the expansion to the frontier, as well.

Yup, I'm convinced that they're practically identical. :)
