The Final ConUS Challenge Update

Oh no!

There are a whole bunch of airports in south Texas I was a-fixin' to go claim...

...oh well, can't wait to see the next challenge.

I just want to thank you and Chip for putting this together- it was fun.

I would also like to take this opportunity to raise a virtual glass in fond memory of Mike Schneider, a heckkuva nice guy and a dedicated airport claimer. When he showed up to pick me up at Grandmother's house in Tallahassee, on day one of the ConUS challenge, he was as excited as a little kid, and we had a blast flying around in his Maule- the same one many of you may recall seeing at Gaston's the year before.

agree Spike, Mike was a stand up guy, im glad that Leah and I shared a table with him at our first Gastons.

and bummer on the challenge, but it sure was fun, thanks Chip and Nick!

Nick, Thanks for putting together the Challenge! You and Chip did a helluva job on it, and it was fun. I think you achieved your goal of getting people to fly to places to which they may not have otherwise traveled.

I propose we reserve him a chair at the next Gastons.

Here's to you, Mike.

:drink:

And thanks to Chip and Nickster for doing the ConUS challenge.

Nick, I know you and Chip intended this to be a one year challange and after one year agreed to keep things going since it was really a challange and not a contest. Is there a reason your ending it? It would be great to keep it going. When ever I fly I always think hmmmm has this field been Conus claimed.

If the reason is your just worn out and too busy or its too expensive, then I totally understand and give you and Chip my deep thanks. If not is there any chance we can entice you to keep it going?

That was a wonderful thing you did for general aviation. I wish I had been more involved - other than just a visitor for the last few weeks. But I have just gotten back into the air, buying an Ercoupe in September and passing my BFR in early October.

I actually had an hour of instruction at an "unclaimed" airport in early September but didn't know about the ConUS Challenge yet. I planned to fly back there to take a photo, but the weather and opportunity just did not fall into place.

So, I will be eagerly awaiting your next idea for "reasons to fly." :)
.

This was so fun! I went to a lot of airport I never would have gone to. Some had not seen a powered aircraft in a couple of years outside of tow planes and jump planes, one had not seen a transient in 4 years.

I liked looking over people's claims and seeing what they felt was the important, memorable thing to photograph, and what their write ups were.

But I do think you forgot to give kudos to one person and that was the top, by leaps and bounds, CONUS Challenger, and that was Barb. She had so many of the airports almost covering Michigan all by herself. She was a CONUS Challenge machine!!

Ah boo - I still have a bunch of claims I haven't gotten to yet. Including one of the three remaining California airports.

I also wanted to get Wisconsin finished up, but not having a job has severely cut back on my bomb-around-for-fun flying. :frown2:

I agree! I think we should keep going for as long as it takes - And with a new prez at AOPA, maybe they'll start actually giving a crap and help out with a little publicity. :mad3:

Guys, thanks so much for this site. I'm sad to see the challenge stop, as I'm about to increase my flying quite a bit by taking the raffle plane around the mostly-unclaimed south Texas for publicity, and I had planned to make a bunch of claims with it. If you can find it in your hearts to keep this going, I'd absolutely love it! If not, I completely understand, and thank you for all of your hard work and dedication.

Well if it opens back up I do have a planned flight for later this month into KSTL which is one of the class B's not yet accounted for.

Nick and Chip,
Thanks for the ConUS Challenge! It gave me a reason to fly more and as a result of landing at so many places I managed to meet some real interesting people and see some wonderful countryside. I'd like to second the request to continue it, if you can(I was hoping to get at least 10 percent of the airports before we were done) Gas prices are down and maybe more people will be getting out this year.

This has really been fun and I thank you guys again. I'm ready for any new ideas you can come up with!

Barb

Kudos to Nick and Chip! While I didn't claim as many as anticipated, it was fun to plan a couple flights around obtaining a claim.

I, too, really thank Nick and Chip. The Challenge got me into close to 40 airports that I had never been to before, and over 50 counting the repeat visits just to claim them. It is always exciting to be somewhere new, and I ran into a few gems to which I will return. Good deal, lots of fun, let's move on.... What's Next?
