The field is IFR. Say intentions?

Still I didn't understand a shipmate who voluntarily got out at 16 years...what was he thinking?!

Ouch.... he must have found a really sweet deal somewhere else or really got tired of boats..... I think I could have even held on to 4 more years...

Come to think about it the best mess halls I ever ate at were Navy mess and Air Force officers mess. It was not below me to pin on a butter bar and go into the officers mess on base.

Sometimes I wish I would have remained career military for the pension

Glad I have mine Sac. Helped a lot when I first got on at a regional, you know, 'cause the pay was soooo good there.

I called the tower this morning to talk about this. They said the same thing happened again this morning! They also confirmed MauleSkinner's assertion above that SVFR can be requested for pattern work. A long held mistake on my part. Thanks for the correction!

When I first started "cfi-ing" it was at an uncontrolled airport but had a CZ (control zone). It was about 7-800' overcast and we were able to get a SVFR from MEM Center for T&Gs. Controller said to let him know how many we did for their traffic count lol. Of course I was an Air Force controller at a nearby AFB so I knew about SVFR anyway.

There's an infamous recording of a tower controller asking a pilot, "If you can't see the airfield but you do see the highway there that leads to it, would you like anything SPECIAL????"

As I recall the pilot still didn't get it.

I heard something similar in Florida one time.

Another time I was IFR, but VMC in a MOA one time. The controller called a plane in front of me and said the MOA just went hot, turn heading (90 degrees to on course) to exit the MOA. The aircraft complied. Then the controller called me and told me the same thing. I just said cancel IFR and will continue with flight following. Controller said Ok.

A few seconds after that the first plane called back to cancel.....:)

Sounds to me like a hint to request special VFR

yeah, that's exactly what it was, and I knew it, but mistakenly learned years ago that SVFR was only for departing or arriving, not closed traffic.
And with the cloud bank playing peek-a-boo with departure end, I didn't want to end up on top with no way to come back down, should it have decided to move slightly east and park.

Not true. You can request SVFR for closed traffic as I've done it.

Yeah, I wasn't picking on you. In that recording, that pilot is already up in it, and in real trouble. The controller's "hint" was real close to the controller declaring for the guy, just to get him on the ground, I suspect... quite a different scene than yours!

I tell myself the same thing, but I only was in for 4 years, 2 1/2 of it hard sea time. Negatives piling up were the same for me - "extend to stay on board", a pitiful re-enlinstment bonus and the lure of CINCHOUS, CIVLANT. But I still paused on my 20th anniversary and said "gee, I could have"...and my wife finished it with "been a crotchey old chief"? Right.

Yeah I wonder why pops called it quits after 21 years, but it's worked out fine for him.
