Thanksgiving

KLOT to KPWK. Brother coming down from KMSN. Unfortunately, all via car. Doing it with my Mom this year. We're bringing desert. It'll be a relatively simple dinner; only five of us.

We'll be be flying GA from ATL area to DSM on Wednesday. Eat too much on Thursday. Pheasant hunt on Friday. Alabama-Auburn football Saturday. Fly back home Sunday.

Hoping for the mythical 'double tailwind' trip so we can make it non-stop going and coming. No-wind flight plan is 4:05. I have a 3:30 fuel limit. I need ~15+kt tailwind to be able to make it non-stop.

I'm in Afghanistan until the week after Thanksgiving, so I'll be spending it in the Chow Hall. I'm thankful for a great crew and a great helicopter that both seem to keep bringing me back home night after night!

THANK YOU for your service.

We had a death in the family last Sunday and spent much of the last week driving to the mid west from central Florida. I was amazed at how many are already traveling for the Thanksgiving weekend.

They don't like traffic...

About 10-12 years ago we drove to PA to visit family for TG. Chicago was AWFUL. From the WI-IL to the IL-IN lines, a total of 78 miles, took 8 hours. And the rest was no picnic either. Never again!

Sadly, the Mooney is staying in the hangar. Happily, the gathering will be at my girlfriend's parents' place, with us, her parents, my parents, and her grandparents. Looking forward to it!

I will be in your neighborhood (VLA) this coming weekend. Thanksgiving is on Saturday there this year. We will have a feast at home on Thanksgiving Day. Ham, homemade yeast rolls, and pumpkin pie is on the menu this year.

Full day's drive from the UP to near Fort Wayne to be with my sister's family. Despite an effort to squeak through early, hit Chicagoland at rush hour this evening. Ugh. Wishing my plane was here.

I am "available" as far as work is concerned but people rarely travel on the holiday itself so I don't think I'm going anywhere except to the neighbor's house but who knows. I'm "baking" my pies right now in case I need to quickly deliver them tomorrow on my way to work.

Wonderful flight today from LZU up to JQF which included a Bravo transition and over the top of CLT to watch the big guys land. Topped it all off by forgetting to close my flight plan for two hours. FS guy was really nice I guess because when they called JQF they told them i was safe on the ground.

Actually, Santa Claus in his current incarnation is an invention of those former narcotics purveyors the Coca Cola Company. But yes, most of the Christmas traditions were taken from the Pagan yule, which celebrated the Winter Solstice.

It just gets tiresome being bombarded with it through every media outlet imaginable and not begin able to approach a commercial retail establishment for over month.

And yes, it's deadly dull for those of us who don't celebrate. I think we're headed out of town this year.

I'm tempted to wear a hajib during the holiday season so that people will stop wishing me Merry Christmas.

No one remembers that Jesus was a nice Jewish boy who had the world's first public relations/advertising company.

Deep frying a turkey for the first time.

Go find Alton Brown's video on turkey frying. In addition to the extreme safety tips, it's hysterically funny.

It's only about 50 miles further to go through the lower peninsula and skip Chicago entirely, and worth every last one of 'em if you ask me.

Roughly, take I-69 north to Lansing, US 127 north until it joins up with I-75, take that north across the bridge, US 2 west, M-77 or M-117 north to M-28 west to US 41 north... And I bet you can find your way home from there. ;)

It'll be a much calmer and more scenic drive. Enjoy!

Turkey just came out of the oven... stuffing is delicious... will let it stand while I work on the sides.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

You betcha that will be our return route. Longer but faster no matter what Google estimates.

Trench for the electrical is done. Wife and daughters are off at her brothers. Left over lasagna is in the fridge. Life is good (OK, I am stuck here on a nice VFR day, but...)

Enjoy your holiday everyone.

Got to fly my RV again ... second time in two days, after more than a month off. :-D
Now, it's turkey and trimmings with mom, dad and my doggie - just as it should be.
And, another Lions loss (no comment)

:yikes: That is an awful photo! Sac... Mr. Cason is even grouchier than you and the Polar Bear are about the holidays. :(

You still get 8 days worth of presents as opposed to 1 day for the rest of us?? :)

Ok Flygirl, I retract what I said! Turkey smells sooooo yummy, and I had a great flight to, and bike ride in, Half Moon Bay!!! The Sac Arrow is happy this Thanksgiving!!

Flew a PC12 from Atlanta to Bozeman yesterday, took the first Delta flight out this morning and was home in time for turkey and football.

I'm having a pretty good Turkey weekend myself, Sac... Going flying tomorrow too.... doing the plane ride thing for the relatives who want one. Hopefully, I can avoid a midair with the scenic helicopter guys taking tourists up for rides around here. :rolleyes2: See?? I told you the holidays are the best time of the year. Now I need to work on your attitude about Christmas. :D

We went out for a scrumptious vegetarian Indian buffet, and then a very pleasant motorcycle ride. Now I'm making lox.

Next year, we need to start a favorite holiday recipes thread two weeks before Thanksgiving...

Didn't get the tailwind on the way to Iowa, but picked up a nice 30kt tailwind on the way back last night. About 5:00 of flight time on the way up and ~3:30 on the return trip which included clearance through ATL's Bravo at 1am that let me get within sight of the PAPIs at ATL.

Went pheasant hunting on Friday when the wind speed was really close to the temp. Made things a little more difficult, but the LeFever did well. ;)

I got to do the same thing through STL's Bravo at 5K this morning and took the obligatory photo of a whole lot of concrete. Had about a 10 knot tailwind too. :) It was a pretty good weekend... now I guess I should start a plans for Christmas thread!

Had headwinds both ways from LZU to JQF Wednesday and the return yesterday :( Got a Bravo clearance going up Wednesday afternoon with a transition across CLT at 5K, always fun to watch the big iron heading toward you. Coming home yesterday we headed NW towards Lincolnton, got cleared into the bravo and turned direct LZU before we got all the way to Lincolnton.

we're also home, put about 15 hours on the plane give or take these last 4 days hitting 6 relatives' homes. Great week for flying on the midwest, I can't recall another thanksgiving where we had to make no time allowances for ice, snow, or rain.

Thanks...... happiness is 12 oclock high over a Bravo...:wink2::wink2:

The "youngsters" came from New Hampshire to spend the day; their grandmother came from Fort Lauderdale. The latter has been here since 11/20(and we're still speaking).)
The 10 yr. old at left, pitcher, whose LL team is NH State champions. They were 14-0. He was named to All-Stars, and the All-Stars won NH State championship.

The extended runway at Manchester Airport(NH)[years ago] only got built after Paula finally ended her holdout on selling her house to the city. It was the last building standing in the way of the extension. The city finally agreed to pay her price.
