As a newbie to ICAO, I started by just filing a flight plan as a test, without flying it. The ICAO form looks mysterious, with all those codes you can choose,, so I didn't try doing it by phone. Instead, I took my time using fltplan. I'm not sure whether I chose the correct options, or even whether there really is one just correct way to complete the form, but I got a sense of accomplishment because my plan was accepted into the system. Yay for small triumphs!

Just entered in the aircraft info and performance numbers following their guides.

I fill in the boxes, submit, save, file, done
It's just like filing any other flight plan on that site, only difference is I selected IACO as the default.

It even picks the ideal altitude and speed for me 9 times out of 10.

+1. I followed the instructions and added the necessary data five years ago when I got my IR, and have simply chosen ICAO (default) since then when filing.

Only caveat is I often disagree with the fltplan.com altitude recommendation and choose a different one.

I used to call them in. No more, fltplan.com on my iphone and its done. P
