Frederick County, VA (home of KOKV) has advertised an increase in the ANNUAL personal property tax rate for airplanes to $0.50 per $100 of valuation for airplanes based in the county. If I'm not mistaken, the rate is currently $0.01 per $100.

The Board and staff discussed the issue of the airplane tax. By consensus, the Board agreed
to setting the personal property tax rate for aircraft at $0.50 per $100 of assessed value

Feel rich yet?

That's about half the rate I pay on my boat.

I have no idea how it happened in NE, the "Tax-Me" state, but there's no personal property tax on non-commercial aircraft here. Blew my mind, since it just cost me about $500 to put new stickers on my 7 year old pickup.

Ouch! Are there any other related aviation taxes in VA?

The mill rate on the county level is variable. We are in Manassas city and our rate is 0.00000001 with the tax only collected if the amount is $75 or more. This results in a rate of 0 up to a value of 75 million.
In the past, some counties had very high mill rates in the percent levels. Planes fled those counties until the politicians got the idea.
In addition to county/city property tax there is an annual sticker from the VA Dept of aviation. It's a nominal fee, $10 or $25.

Airplane owners don’t represent much of the voters, they get away with it ,because if you own an airplane you must be rich ,and can afford it.

That's $500 for a plane valued at $100k. I pay nearly that much on my minivan in KS.

Yeah, in reality it's a pretty small amount. The property taxes that we deal with here in Kansas for our cars and trucks are much higher, which I find very frustrating. Although I think the Kansas state tax on aircraft under 30 years old is quite high, I forget the exact amount.

That's a HUUUGE amount, $500 for a minivan and you get nothing in return.

Frankly $1 is insane, unless the local government is footing the bill for your engine reserve or gave you a free loan for the plane, or free access to CFIs or something.

At a certain point you're renting, even though you paid for all of it.

Oh, no, I get the return of driving on toll roads so our highway funds can be used make up for the lack of state funding because a pair of brothers down in Wichita demand we not tax businesses. Kansas is (not) awesome. I've lived in South Dakota, Florida, Texas, New York, and Kansas. You get the least bang for your tax $$ in Kansas. The best deal I've found in terms of what you get out of the tax money you pay into the state is New York.

Really? For example? (40 year former, and never again, resident of NYS)? I don't recall "getting" anything since for the 2nd half of that term I was a cash cow.

Oh, I'm not saying I felt like a got a lot for my tax dollars but at least we got something. Amazing public transportation, public services like police, advocates, social workers we plentiful and well paid, lots of parks, publicly subsidised arts programs, urban youth organizations.

In Kansas, I feel like a pay just as much of my overall income in taxes and see very little of it in return for state services, which is why I say you get more bang for the buck as a resident of NY (at least for me being a NYC resident, can't speak for you upstaters) than you do in Kansas.

Not sure if things have changed or not, but the public K-12 in upstate NY was far better than Texas or Arizona. When we moved from NY to AZ, I skipped 5th grade thanks to the NY public schools.

NY, what a socialist scum hole, pretty upstate state, but the government is horrible, however...they recently put some benifits towards working aircraft which are very non New York like.

Is there such a thing as voluntary taxation?

Sure, pay for use type stuff, fuel taxes that actually go towards roads, AV fuel taxes, buying postage stamps, that type of thing.

Meh. Different strokes, man.

I live and own property (if it pleases the crown) here, upstate the great, the people, the country side, tons of rivers and lakes, good hard working folks, it's just the very oppressive and anti freedom government that sends people and especially business running away for places like Texas and other more American states, the sad part is much like a infectious disease, the people who have spent their lives here are carriers, and don't often realize exactly why their old home state was such a failure and go on to try to vote in the same type of government in their new adopted states.

I wish I had that rate. For about 100K in valuation, I pay $1,500 every Dec in taxes for my planes. Like to know where that goes.

Upstaters get squat and have no real voice. NYC is a sewer.

Amazingly there's no sales tax on AC. Prolly Ugly Andy hasn't taken notice yet.

On my vintage plane, its $40/year in NH. No income tax, but plenty of property tax, which has its positives and negatives like all taxes. I like what I pay for around here, and I like the area. Sure, I always wish it could be lower, but then I could also go live in a hole in the ground in the middle no-****ing-where-istan and pay a lot less. All kinds of funding questions come on up on during local elections, and I make sure to vote every time to keep things in check.

We just got hit at Georgetown TX for property tax for our rental of city owned hangars. Only two counties in Texas do this and I know that Williamson is a right wing heavily Republican county. Protesting but not holding out hope. Not a lot but we dumped a lot of tea in the harbor for stuff such as this.

Are you saying that those taxes are voluntary because you could just do without the taxed items?

Since when have republicans been against taxes? lol

No, because of you don't use the service you don't pay for it and it's not taxing you for something you own or just your existence.

What if it's something that you have to use in order to survive? You mentioned fuel taxes that go toward roads, for example. How would that be "voluntary"?

As long as it's not excessive, and matches the quality of the product the government is providing sure.

Or don't buy gas

So, if the product that the money is used for is high quality, that makes the tax voluntary?

Or don't buy gas

So if the taxed item is something that you can do without, that makes the tax voluntary?

Dalton GA. I guess I need to establish an LLC in Delaware.

Doesn’t work, in NC marinas and airports report boats and planes to the government, who then sends you a tax bill. NC rates are higher than OP.

That’s the same as for a three-year-old airplane in Iowa. That is based on the new valuation, not current valuation. And it is $0.25 per $100 from age 4 to 29 years.
