Take two jets...

Won't let me read the full story without subscribing or joining.

So I'm guessing the jist of it is Immelt had two jets for himself, and when GE dissolved its flight department that one was conveniently forgotten about?

More like in - wherever he flew he flew with 2 jets - just in case of mechanical difficulties with the first one, he can quickly change to the other one without having to wait.

Well, that's impressive.

Flew down to Monterrey Mexico from ATL one time. There was some kind of "meeting of the Americas" or something like that. Jumbo jets from all over the world were there for each country's head of state. AF1 was there w/ not one but both 747s. I was surprised to see that.

Deleted. Full article is too long for me to post it here.

Always nice to have a spare, whenever needed.

Because chartering a jet if your personal one breaks down would just be too horrible to imagine.

I wonder if this was Immelt's direction, or if the pilots decided he needed the hot spare so they had an excuse to go.

But but but, what if the second one has a mechanical first..???

I suspect that the flight department had no say in the matter.

Chartering a jet is for the peons. Never know what’s available, what booze is on board, how soft the leather is, how it’s maintained, how hot the FA is, or how much the pilots will lick your boots. No way a big-shot CEO should have to put up with that.

Sorry the link was behind a pay-wall for some. I figured sharing from the Apple News link, free on any Apple iOS device, WSJ wouldn't play their stupid games. But alas, no.

International trips it SOP to send both planes for POTUS...but not always necessarily to the destination airport.

I worked with NetJets' #2 customer at one time and they would often send a second backup jet...but that was on their dime, not the customer.

LOL. I was thinking the same. If he doesn't go anywhere without a backup, I guess he doesn't go if there isn't a backup.

But as long as the plane has a Rolls or Pratt, he should be ok.
