SW-Ohio/MI/IN/Everyone Gathering

Well, our groundspeed was in the high 220's for most of the trip down at 11,500 and in the mid-140's at 4500 and under on the way home... What a nice day to fly, though! Beautifully smooth, though. And after takeoff, we initially caught up to Grant and Leslie, then I leaned back to Super-Mooney-Efficient and we stayed pretty well even for a while until they disappeared off to the left.

It was great to see Grant, Leslie, and Liz (JoeSelch) again, and meet everyone else for the first time in person! Hopefully next time Kacy J's will have buns and root beer.

Likewise, Kent. And, to meet your lovely fiancee!

Meanwhile, I was thrilled to be travelling at 140+ knots IAS and 7 gph. Would have been an entirely different kind of trip in the ole Sooper Yooper Yankee. Looking forward to more PoA fly-ins this year!

My flight home was uneventful. Strangely, Indy Approach asked me to fly at 3000 for traffic avoidance for most of my trip back. But it wasn't too bumpy down there. Next time I will rope my wife in to coming.

I had fun. Great to meet you guys face to face.

Depends on the CFI. This CFI would - 20G32 isn't a big deal.

Liz, I think you're right! We'll go next for "anywhere but close to home." Plus I really don't know how to fly less than 300 nm! :)

300 is a bit long for a "for the hell of it" in a 182:lol:

Ok so the next time we meet up I feel we should yield a bit to the north for some of our MI friends that made the trip south. Looks like a wonderful restaurant can be found at 38D, but someone else can head the next one up when it is a bit warmer. Heard lots of talk about the Gastons get together and the Wings meet up so I am sure there will be chances for more gatherings. Here are some pictures of today's event and I know others have more pictures to share.
Very nice photos!

Did the get-together folks were planning at KAZO a while back ever happen?

LOL. And you were worried about the lack of on-field assistance at Ray! The friendliest little airport in Michigan offers full service to those who know enough to ask! ;)

Seriously, glad you made it out. And back. Hope you haven't scratched Ray entirely off your list for home base.
Thanks, and of course I'm ALWAYS thinking about hangaring at Ray. That's probably as far as it will get though, unless things change in my life. The fact is, KVLL is about the same distance from either home or work, but Ray is about twice as far from work as KVLL is.

Glad it was such a fun event! Let's keep these going, and one time or another we'll be able to make it.

I think there is a shot at Gaston's, though.

Ted,

What is the id for Gastons field and the one that is close by.

Matt and I discussed this a bit yesterday.

3M0 is Gaston's
LOM is Wings
6Y9 is, well, 6Y9
WV62 is Windwood

Those are the 4 weekend PoA events

Thanks Ed, I was the lone Piper yesterday would have loved some big brother support from a Comanche at Muncie LOL

3M0 is about a 450 nm flight. So it's a good weekend trip. WV62 is closer, and also nice.

Thanks, Your son is a cutie. I got a good pic of Matt's oldest sound asleep on the way to MIE yesterday.

I was planning on it. Got up early and everything. Then there were just a bunch of bands coming in off the lake. I would have had to go 225 miles for a 150 mile trip to make it safely.

I fully understand, having flown up north in the past. But you were still missed. I was looking forward to seeing the Comanche.

We could just try to do a monthly lunch. 3rd weekend each month?

So what is the next one? Anybody?
A few suggestions for meetups up this way (MI or northern OH)...

1. KAZO - has by far the best Italian restaurant I know of close to an airport (Bravo). You taxi to Duncan Aviation and from there, it's about a 1/8 mile walk.

2. KJXN - diner on the field, a little like Kacy J's. For salad buffs, they have some really good new ones.

3. 3DA (Dalton/Flushing, MI) - diner on the field, also a family/Italian restaurant about 1/8 mile down the road (IMO better than the diner, not quite on the level of Bravo, but very good). The runway is 2500 feet long with thresholds displaced ~800 feet both ways.

4. 3W2 (Put-in Bay, OH) - lots of choices for lunch (rent a golf cart, drive the mile into town), but this will have to wait til summer.

5. KPCW (Port Clinton, OH) - Mon Ami restaurant and winery, very nice but is a short drive. The restaurant will send a driver to pick you up.

6. KRNP (Owosso, MI) - diner on the field, only open for lunch on weekends. I'm actually not sure if this one is still in business, and I've never managed to get there when it's open so I don't know how good it is.

7. 61D (Plainwell, MI) - very nice diner on the field. The only time I was there, the runway was on the rough side.

Other ideas?

Prop Blast Cafe http://propblastcafe.com at Coldwater, MI - KOEB
(haven't tried it yet)

BTW, I really like the Crosswinds Cafe at Owosso. But, it's very small and often crowded.

VPZ has a steakhouse right around the corner.

RCR has places across the street (both west and south)

I used to fly in to Romeo many years ago. I had some work at the Ford plant when they were converting it to an engine plane back in 88 89. Ok airport but not much around if I remember correctly.

Being from northern Ohio, if you do Put-in-Bay or Port Clinton, I'm flying from Wisconsin. Took my homecoming date one year to Mon Ami.

There will be more, Bruce. We're keeping this thread open for future gatherings.

Ironically, I missed it, and I was the OP. :)

Not to hi-jack, but please tell me about this Put in Bay. Is this possibly a fun day trip for two? I'm looking for cool things to do with my spousal unit.

Yes absoulutly. My wife and I go there and stay in a bed and breakfast for just a night or two. Have some dinner and drive the island on a golf cart. It is a good time.

You won't find a better trip anywhere. Rent a golf cart at the airport or take the bus. There's a winery on the Island, lots of restaurants and a wonderful little boulevard. Like the man said, you can rent a room and stay for the night, or make it a day trip, in the summer it doesn't get dark until 9:30.

Actually, you will. They don't call it the Key West of the Midwest because it's better than Key West! But the real Key West is a slightly longer trip! Definitely a nice 1-2 night trip, or even same day if you prefer.

Two winery's on the island now, one on the north side, they only make the wine, no grape growing. My wife and I went there last summer and spent the afternoons at the winery sharing a bottle of wine and enjoying the view.

I need to take the wife here this summer.

We drove :( and left the car I mainland, took our bicycles across, that was great! I think we circled the island at least twice while we were there
