Suspicious Local "Crash"

No way while leaning, even conservatively but if you leave the mixture at full rich while tooling along with a wide open throttle at 5000 DA I think you can manage even more than 12gph. And if this was a wet rental, that could be exactly how it was being operated.
Possibly. I was more addressing Dan saying that the one he has flown burns 12GPH and they consider that good..and that happens while leaning it aggressively.

Actually, I said I saw 10 gph in the C172N180.

Others that flew the same airplane reported 12 gph. My guess is they were afraid of the red knob (you never lean under 5,000!)
 
I have never seen worse than 9 gph in my C-172M with 180 hp. We figure 8 gph for a conservative burn and usually get 7. We lean, but even without leaning we never got worse than 9.

Sounds like about what the POH says. I generally get around 8-9 and flight plan 10 mostly because it's easy to multiply for simple folk like me.
