I had a great day of flying today. Four flights, three of them day and one at night.

It was good winter flying weather with a clear sky most of the day, light winds, and a warmer temperature than the deep freeze we had been stuck in for a while. Seemed like everyone was out flying today.

Here are pictures of tonight's sunset north of Appleton, WI (ATW). This was during an introductory lesson, so my newest student got quite a treat. B)

Wow.. Nice pics! Since I've moved to the midwest, I absolutely DESPISE winter, but one thing ya'll have going for you up here is definitely the sunsets! Didn't Mark Twain write about sunsets on the Mississippi?

Has anyone else noticed how much MORE beautiful sunsets are from the air versus the ground? I keep telling people, but they don't believe me. :/

William,

They have no clue what they're missing. You could reason with them - Tell them that the redness of the sunset is due to the light traveling through the atmosphere. They should believe that much at least. Then, tell them that the deep reds you see here are due to the sunlight traveling through the atmosphere, hitting the undersides of distant clouds, and being reflected farther through the atmosphere. You will not be able to see reds this deep from the ground.

Here's a couple more of the same sunset Kate posted, but from about 80nm further east. Note the tiny sliver of moon.

Those are great. So many colors. I'll bet the student signed up for more lessons??!!

I did most of my instrument instruction in the winter evenings. So I used to get to hear about how beautiful the sunsets were but I seldom got to see them. Darn Hood!

Same here. 3:30-5:30, which in winter overlapped sunset. I always complained about not getting to see. My CFII said, "Just wait, someday you'll be over here in this seat, and you can look all you want." It was kind of hard to believe at that time, as an instrument student. And now I'm a CFII enjoying views like those pictures. Worth all the work.
