Suggestions for practicing crosswind landings

My instructor had me practice on cows in a field. Put the plane into a slip and then line up on one cow. Then use your rudders to move over to another cow, then back to the first cow. This would be slipping the whole approach. Then come at it from 180 degrees so you can work it the other way. I would think hay bales would work too.

Redbird Flight Simulations has a simulator that really helps with this. It's called the X-wind. We have one in Denver at Centennial Airport, and then I think the other closest one to you is at University of Central Missouri. There's nothing like being able to develop the muscle skills for a proper sideslip in a calm environment. At crosswindconceptsltd.com you can find out more information about the program and training.

Have to at least try! Sometimes, it winds up a go-around. Sometimes it winds up with the aircraft safely landed. The key is knowing when you've goofed up enough to require the GA.
Agree...

It was meant as advice to a newbie... Later he should be able to know the limits of what can and can't be corrected safely

Even as a student the same was encouraged to me. The idea being that if I was always so passive about it, I'd fly that way forever.
