Does anyone know for sure if you can get a cell signal for an iPhone through a Stratus2?

I was thinking about lost comm procedures the other day, and it seems like the Stratus, since it's wi-fi, could possibly get you a signal at 10,000 ft.

Anyone know?

Stratus 2 doesn't route so it won't connect for anything other than sending ADS-B data to an ipad or iphone. At least that's my understanding of its operation.

No. Stratus has wifi but that doesn't mean it has cellular. And even if it did, if the Stratus could connect to the cellular network then why couldn't your iPhone? It seems like adding an additional hop would unnecessarily complicate the matter. -Paul

The stratus only supply's info by wifi to Foreflight device.

If the stratus has wifi then it can be done. But you will need a smartphone and a few apps. Register to google voice and get issued a permanent phone number. Then download an app that will let you talk through google voice (for the iPhone I use GV Phone).
In the end you will have two phone numbers assigned to your cell phone.

So it won't exactly give you a cell signal but you will be able to make phone calls.

If I understand what you're suggesting, it won't work. The Stratus uses a WiFi network to transmit data from itself to the iPad. That's it. It doesn't provide a cellular signal and it doesn't have any way of interacting with a land-based WiFi network.

So you can install GV or Skype or whatever to make phone calls over WiFi while you're on the ground connected to a WiFi network at your hotel or fbo, but once you're airborne you're not connecting to any internet-connected WiFi network.
