Stolen Plane Found in Gwinnett

POSTED: 5:25 am EDT October 11, 2005
UPDATED: 5:36 am EDT October 11, 2005

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Police were searching for clues Tuesday after a jet stolen from Florida turned up this weekend at a Gwinnett County airport although no one knows how it got there.

The 1995 twin engine Cessna Citation Seven, which has an estimated worth of $7 million, is based in St. Augustine, Fla. The aircraft was found either Saturday night or early Sunday morning at Briscoe Airfield in Lawrenceville.

"Apparently, it is stolen," Officer Darren Moloney, a police spokesman said.

The jet's owners, identified as the Pinnacle Air charter company, were said to be cooperating with investigators.

Gwinnett police are coordinating the investigation with various federal agencies.

Police had no clues who landed the plane at the airfield in the middle of the night. It was not immediately clear what, if anything, was contained in the plain.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Ryan Young contributed to this report.

[It is "plain" that Channel 2 does not edit very well. -- Mike]

It wasn't me! And I have an airtight alibi -- I was at the Commander Owners fly-in.

So, where's Bob G? :D

Interesting. There is a Pinnacle Air that operates out of NW Arkansas.

Here's the latest on this. 22-year-old stole it for a joy ride.

It would have been nice if someone had locked the plane.

Dave

A spokesman for the FBI said he was "concerned" about the incident.

"I would just encourage increased vigilance at the various airports and the companies that have these aircraft to ensure better security," FBI Special Agent Stephen Emmett said. "I don't think it requires any systems changes or anything."
THANK YOU, Agent Emmett! Still we can expect knees jerking in 3,2,1....

Greg:

Have you received your National Pilot Alert from AOPA? The follow up letter soliciting a contribution to the PAC? In that letter, Phil Boyer states Senators Hillary R. Clinton (D-NY) and Richard Durbin (D-Ill) were successful in adding an amendment to the Homeland Security appropriation bill calling for a government study of aviation security. They are just looking for reasons to clamp down on GA.

The guys that left this plane open should have their butt whipped.

Dave

I was thinking how funny it would have bene if the thief had filed an IFR flight plan right down to his name and phone number...

I told our corporate pilot I was sure I could get the thing airborne. Then it would just be a matter of calling loved ones and saying goodbye.

A Citation.

You gotta be kidding me.

And a bunch of other guys went along.

To quote the estimable Dr. Chien, "Jay-sus"!

(Edit) OK, wait, the guy is typed in one variety of Citation; not quite so over-the-top, now.

Still. He thought he'd get away with it?

Hmm I think we could be a bit more...um..creative in his penance don't ya think?

Sorry Scott:

Just venting. I didn't like the crew's comments.

Could we at least include some sort of coporal punishment? Back in my old Army days, we used to refer to putting a boot up one's posterier (different actual wording). May not sound great, but it did make an impression. :D

Yeah I was thinking something allong those ways, pull his finger nails out, eatned by bugs, or just beaten sensless would be fine with me.

Maybe he could be force fed Frito Chili Pie until he bursts

I don't understand how five, seemingly innocent passengers were on an aircraft taken for a joy ride. Were they sitting in the plane when it was stolen? Were they just along for the ride? Did they appear there out of a time portal?

The thief apparently was a comm pilot so I can see how he could fool some ignorant buddies into thinking it was all OK. Gotta hand it to the guy though. It was a ballsy move to just walk out and board his friends and take off. It was one of his pax that tipped off the authorities after they found out he stole the plane.

Thanks to this idiot CNN just spent ten minutes "exposing" GA security. They played a video clip of a hack politician pontificating how terrorists could steal a GA airplane and spread chem and bio weapons into a major city. The anti-GA crowd will have a field day with this.

OK, here we go. Prop locks, door locks, baggage security, background checks, pee in a cup before boarding.....More regs, more fees....more restricted airspace...

Yeah, a prop lock would have stopped this one. What a moron that ex-pilot is.

What did they do when someone used to steal another man's horse?

I give up; blame FEMA?? :lightning:

We'll be blaming DHS (of which FEMA is a part) when TSA slams new onerous security requirements on us.

I just read in AvWeb that this particular "commercial pilot" had a previous history of not returning aircraft ! Definately time for the FAA to get him out of our ranks.
