Stol drag, new class at Reno races.

Hell yes! The more bulbous and boxy the better. I want a Shorts Skyvan, aerodynamic crushing class.

That looks like it would be a lot of fun to watch. You can see the whole race from one spot-unique in airplane races. It also looks quite challenging.

Looks like the guys who started this event are the ones who started STOL Drag Racing.

It was a blast to watch at Reno. And judging by some of the interviews all the competitors seemed to be having a lot of fun flying against each other, and not taking it nearly as seriously as the boyz in the expensive big iron now do. The audience picks up on that.

Unfortunately the high, gusty crosswinds on Sunday kept them grounded. So instead they came up into the stands to talk with race fans. Trent Palmer and Cathy Page were kind enough to find some space to sign my Section 3 tee.

Totally agree with @GR55. I think it was really the only form of racing at the Air Races this year. More to the point it required a heck of a lot of skill and judgment. And, it seemed to me, it wasn’t a category where $$$$$=greater horsepower therefore I win. I hope we get to see more of this type of racing in the future.

Cool Reno is listening and evolving with aviation with the large interest over the last few years in backcountry stuff

Back in the day they also had glider racing and balloon racing

We were planing on staying through Sunday but the winds that were forecasted together with low level wind shear convinced us to leave on Sunday morning. As it turns out, it was the right decision. We flew into KCXP on Wednesday and the folks at Mountain West Aviation were great. We had a great time, hope to be back again.
