Insanely stiff when cold, loosens up when warm.

Is there a fix, or is the only solution to replace the cable?

Did you loosen the carb side to see if the cable and linkages are traveling easily?

The cable can be lubricated....and then changed next year...at least that's how mine went.

I haven't yet. That'll be this week. The carb *should* be good as it was rebuilt a couple of years ago and the mixture control problem existed before and after the rebuild according to the previous owner. But I'm going to be double checking this week with a buddy of mine who knows WTF he's doing.

At the annual the mechanic said they tried to use "really good penetrating oil" to loosen it up to no avail.

Tom-D does cables now, if you can answer his questions. ;):)

What is the speed of an unladen braided 16 gauge 7-wire cable?

Mine in my 180 did the same thing...I didn't like it and was waiting for the cable to break....Nice clean and lube from the A&P and we are good to go. Next time it happens though ill likely just replace the cable before something bad happens.

That's what I'm wondering. If the cable is coming apart inside or if it's just seized up from being old.

So hoses are replaceable by the owner.... And a mixture control cable is really just a cable inside of a hose. So... I can do that myself, right? :D

EGT/CHT is just a big clock connected to two electric hoses. No A&P needed for that either right?

Quite common to be gummed up with age. It cannot be lubricated properly without being dismantled and cleaned, which is why the quick fixes of spraying something all over the ends from the outside can make the problem worse over time.

If it is worse when cold and less so when warm, suggests the cable is not coming apart.

Sounds like an oily cable to me. Degrease then WD-40 the snot out of it and see how it works then.

The work mechanic came over and helped me out today. We took turns manipulating the control whilst spraying WD-40 into it. Helped a bit. Probably 30% better than it was. But you'd have to take it off to do it properly like a motorcycle throttle cable. Fortunately my 200 dollar cable arrived from Spruce today. UN-fortunately I have a certificated aircraft so I can't replace it myself. The work mechanic (who also has virtually assembled an RV-7) said it'd be a piece of cake, but I don't wanna do the whole 'mysteriously new part' nonsense in my plane. EGT/CHT arrives next week. Trip to Arizona is in 2 weeks. Hopefully I can get the A&P to take care of both items. And not bend me over a barrel.
