Fox TV News reporting that a California couple has found personal effects that are may be Steve Fossett's.

More info to follow....

Seems like that would have been in range of his departure point.

But hey, the FARK therad is hysterical:

issFeasance: SurfaceTension: MissFeasance: SurfaceTension: sullyman: oldebayer: He probably faked his death to collect the insurance. Has anyone checked his attic?

Speaking of attics, that just gave me an idea. Maybe in his endless quest to break world records, he is attempting to break Anne Franks hide and go seek record.

Anne Frank couldn't fly. She was deaf/mute.

You're thinking of Amelia Earhart.

a) You mean Helen Keller.

Re: Fossett news

More from the rec.soaring newsgroup:

The location - Minaret Lake. ID card SSA, Authorities apparently called SSA headquarters in Hobbs. (unconfirmed)

They say they beleive its his plane but have not confirmed yet. My guess is with all this stuff the probability is high. What will be interesting is:"

1) What the NTSB will opine happened if they can
2) Where the wreckage was located in comparison to where SAR was flown

He didn't have a chute from what I have read. Wouldn't his body be in or near the airplane?

Lots of hungry critters in those woods...

True, very true. This is why I say anything not attached to you is baggage. Wear your survival vest over terrain like this. Not that this would have helped Fosset, but you never know.

Possibly.

His effects being found a distance away could be attributed to furry creatures moving stuff around as Dan is saying below

Another possibility is that he survived and was moving away form the wreckage and dropped the items.

Moving away from the wreck is not the best option in most cases. But until we get a report fo what they find at the wreckage site anything is possible.

Drift....I saw his FAA certificate on TV. It showed 401 S. LaSalle as the address which is his office. I had no idea you can put an office address on the airman records. I thought you had to list an address where your body was. (Sorry. Didn't mean that in Steve's case.)

I understand the CPA site shows his planned track and where this is; can anyone enlighten us. I don't below to that site.

Best,

Dave

Photo of the wreckage

Yeah, I saw a series of photos uploaded yesterday/today, purported to be from Fossett's plane:

However, the photo of "the Bellanca Super Decathlon Steve Fossett was flying on Monday" on www.SteveFossett.com doesn't seem to have the same paint scheme as these parts.

The "Pacific Scientific" part shown in one photo is used in the harness mechanism on some Decathlons.

I think with the condition of the wreakage and that it is reported that it appears that he flew into terrain... I don't think he made it out to hike to the place where his ID was found. My money is on some animal having a nice meal and dragging the body with the ID to that point. Was probally in the cloumbia fleace found nearby.

RIP and blues skys Steve.

Missa

Good chance of that.

"It's quite often if you don't find remains within a few days, because of animals, you'll find nothing at all," Anderson said.

I say Steve just resurfaced because he wants in on the bailout deal.

the other piece of ID that was found was his SSA (soaring society of america) card, which also includes the NAA Sporting License (i think) that allows you to make claims for national and world records.

While listening to the radio on the drive home this evening there was a report of "body parts" having been found at the crash site.

CAVU Steve.

I was hoping he bailed out and I was living on a quiet beach somewhere, tired of the rat race we call humanity. Maybe that is what I should do! Now, where did I put that parachute? :dunno:

RIP Steve Fossit, your work is done.

< Cynical paranoia >

Watch for Steve Fossett's disappearance and the long time search to be used as the impetus for mandating 406MHz ELTs in all aircraft.

Nevermind that his 121.5 ELT didn't go off. The new one wouldn't go off either, but we have to do something to save him. and make those rich pilots pay for the loss, or something.

We can only hope this story comes off the front page fairly quickly. The country is a bit distracted at the moment.

You can list any MAILING address with the FAA but you need to give them your residence also. Look me up and you'll find my PO BOX. It really isn't big enough to live in. My residence IS known to the FAA (and several other government agencies).

406MHz ELT might be my next upgrade anyways. I'd like to get it done BEFORE the FAA mandates it and while (when) I can afford it.

I'm holding out for the $600 406MHz ELT with a GPS interface that's supposed to become available within a year. Until then I have a GPS enhanced PLB.
