I don't have any extra ribs; do you?

I do have a sore rib I wish would go away, but I don't think of it as spare.

So we're at the opening of a new restaurant today and this is on the menu, another term which none of us could relate the seeds of.

Best,

Dave

I can see me at the Doctor's office now.

Doc: What seems to be the problem?
Me: Well, I'm having trouble with spare ribs?
Doc: What ribs?
Me: You know the spare one--down here on the bottom left.
Doc: Oh, I thought you meant the ones you eat!
Me: Well I hope not, it would take a lot of those bottom lefts to make a meal.

And why is it a spare rib? Would one keep that like the spare on a car and if one goes flat you change it? Wouldn't that hurt a lot?

Best,

Dave

Best I could fine is:

"The origin of the name "spare ribs" is not certain, but could be related to the spare amount of meat after the belly is removed." (Wikipedia)

ehow.com says

"
The origin of the term "spare ribs" is unknown. However, in 17th century England, they were called "spear ribs" or "ribspare". These terms originated from the German "rippespeer," which is equivalent to smoked pork loin. It has also been suggested that they are "spare" because they are a secondary set of unnecessary ribs attached to a pig's spine.

I also found that women do not have more ribs than men because Adam gave one up.

I also found that women do not have more ribs than men because Adam gave one up.

It's all Adam's fault.

God creates Adam, and soon Adam is complaining that he's all alone in the Garden of Eden. So God says, "Okay, I'll make you a companion, a beautiful creature who'll cook and clean for you. It will be able to converse intelligently on any subject, and never ever complain or argue."

Adam says, "That sounds great."

God says, "The only thing is, it will cost you an arm and a leg."

Adam says, "That sounds expensive!! What can I get for a rib?"

Well, maybe when it came to Adam the meaning was to tease as to rib someone (ducking and dodging), but that wouldn't explain it being on a restaurant menu; would it?
Lots of perplexing things to ponder on these holiday weekends after eating ice cream (when one has an intolerance to milk). That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it <g>

So you're in the Quervo again, eh?

Nice to hear from you Wayne!

I also wonder about 'complementary' nuts.

Haven't had any say one nice thing to me; but they have caused indigestion on occasion <g>

That's because you never met me. When I'm in a good mood I've been described that way.

I thought the term meant "spare" as in "small."
