Spare airplane - rent out or mothball.

I'm a consultant, not deployed military. I want to make this clear out of respect for the people who serve here. I'm here for selfish reasons. The people who serve here have a much more noble purpose for their stay...

Ok, either way, same basic thing scheduling wise, you're like me. Personally I see nothing noble that our military has done since the War of 1812.

Hmmmm, small world. When I got out of the armed forces, I was hired back on as a civvie doing basically what I used to do as a Marine. Made a lot more as a civvie though. I even got to stay in Pusan for another year. Good times.

Put it on lease back at a flying club or rental outfit. They will keep it moving and already have maintenance people lined up. Just be ready for them to be sending you checks for rentals as well as bills for repairs. Don't ever go see the plane until you return home for good. That way you'll never know how much stuff got beat up by renters.

By noble I meant for them to serve a bigger purpose than themselves, be it real or not. I always have respect for that.

I'm from Europe, so my opinions about the use of the US armed forces will obviously be different from most Americans, but I still have respect for the individuals who choose to serve for a cause they believe in.

It's all good, I'm from Europe myself, and 70% of my work is foreign from the U.S..

My mechanic has deals with several folks where he flys their plane periodically.

Here's a thought for you...why not rent it back to the current owner. He may be selling becuase he doesn't fly enough to justify ownership but would fly enough to keep it lubricated. He knows the plane and would probably take care of it.

That would be good, problem with most of these deals is the owner lost their medical.:(

Exactly the case here, not an option unfortunately.

Where is this aircraft located?

Fly it to BVS and I'll care for it for the use of it.

There's a good offer, at least you know it'll get well taken care for even if it doesn't make an income.

Well, looks like I got out of this deal w/o eating my word. Prebuy revealed "substantial corrosion" in the right wing spar and rear fuselage.
What made it even funnier was the owners comment; "Nonsense, I would fly this anywhere right now", and he graciously offered $500 off the price of the plane, when I got a off-the-cuff estimate of 3k plus a new wing to fix the issue.

C150 = trainer. Is your wife in Korea with you? Does your wife have a PPL? If no & yes, respectively, maybe have her train in it while you're gone. That will keep it busy for at least part of the year. If it sits for several months that isn't going to materially hurt it.

Then you'd come home to a PPL wife and a good plane and that is never a bad thing.

Yep, we are here because of my wife... Great idea otherwise!

"pay" was used because your underlying question is about cost justifying and/or subsidizing the purchase.

As to Dr. Henning's observation: I travel 48 weeks a year. Typically leave the house 0545 Monday and get back 1700 Friday. Am I remotely capable of understanding being away more than I'm home?

Based on that travel pattern no, you don't have a clue what it feels like being away from home.

Thanks, I wasn't going to comment on the difference between a weekly rotation and being gone 9 months or a year at a time then getting home for 2 weeks from half way around the world.

The last time I was "home" was 6 years ago. Looks like I'll get there after this year. I'm just not sure where that will be :)
