Sorry Steve, Here's Why Apple Stores Won't Work

Commentary: Sorry, Steve: Here's Why Apple Stores Won't Work
New retail outlets aren't going to fix Apple's sales

Well-trained Apple salespeople in posh Apple stores can convince would-be buyers of the Mac's unique advantages, including its well-regarded iMovie software for making home videos and its iTunes program for burning custom CDs....

With its top-notch brand and proven marketing panache, Apple should have a shot at improving on the Gateway Country Store model.

...the leases for Apple's stores could cost $1.2 million a year each, says David A. Goldstein, president of researcher Channel Marketing Corp. Since PC retailing gross margins are normally 10% or less, Apple would have to sell $12 million a year per store to pay for the space

"When you choose to compete with your retailers, clearly that's not a comfortable situation," says CompUSA Chief Operating Officer Lawrence N. Mondry.

That's pretty funny. I wonder what local newspaper this guy is writing Obits for now?

With the quality of his insightful analysis, he's probably setting economic policy for the Fed.

"I give them two years before they're turning out the lights on a very painful and expensive mistake," says Goldstein.

Actually if he's like our old journalists around here, they go to work for the government department that they used to cover as their "PIO", since they were careful never to print the real truth about their boondoggles and they know where all the bodies are buried.

Former Denver Post transportation guy: PIO for the Regional Transportation District.

Former TV reporter: PIO for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Former Denver Post Education reporter: PIO for Denver School Board.

Former DIA beat reporter: PIO for DIA (Who recently stood straight faced in front of the camera after a woman was raped in the terminal late at night after being stranded by a missed flight, and said, "We believe DIA is 100% safe". Nothing's 100% safe. And now video is out of airport staff watching the thing happen. Two Frontier mechanics saw it from OUTSIDE the terminal a floor DOWN and made their way inside to break it up. While airport crew watched and walked away. The PIO said they "followed procedure" to go look for not-findable airport "security".)

Methinks the "media" is a little too cozy with government, hoping for a ride of their own on the gravy train.

Edward R. Murrow would be displeased. :( "Nothing to see here, move along." = Good government job if you "play ball", apparently.
