Personal family issues ('nuff said) have been placing quite a bit of stress on Janet and I the last few weeks.

She's not a big fan of flying so when I offered to take her tonight she predictably said, "That's ok -- I'll work in the garden -- you go."

Today is one of those perfect summer days -- dry, not too hot, not many clouds, light winds.

I drove 30 minutes, opened the hangar door, and dropped everything else from my mind as I preflighted, pulled, checked, tied down, propped, and listened.

All systems go, untie, pull chocks, climb in.

She seems eager to go. Oil temps and pressure good. Taxi to the end of 27, announce, full power -- roll -- tail up (still makes me smile), roll, roll -- airborne.

We climbed out the usual I'll-get-there-don't-rush-me way and soon had 1000' of air between the wheels and most of the stuff below. Pressure good, RPM good, trim off pressure, enjoy the view.

I could see the ridge all the way to Elkins, WV to the south, and thought I could see Pittsburgh to the North. I flew due east, got close to the river, and descended to enjoy some low-level flying over the treetops. We have lots of nothing out here with the only obstacles the odd cell tower here and there.

Laurel Ridge was bathed in perfect late-day light, and even Uniontown looked sparkling this evening.

I did a few practice turns about a point at 70 MPH (do the math, Comm students) and waved to Janet down below. Winds were steady out of the south but not enough to cause problems.

I took the long way around town and overflew a few familiar houses, then headed west, opting to stay low since I could barely see a thing with the sun in my eyes. From time to time I slipped so I could look straight ahead through the open side window.

Too soon I was entering a left downwind for 27. I pulled the power to 1500 RPM and turned in early so I could slip my way down. On final I pulled power to idle and enjoyed the view out the left side window, the tree tops sweeping beneath, the grass next to the paved runway perfectly trimmed and beckoning.

I picked a line made by cut grass and placed the right wheel on it to accommodate the very light crosswind. Soon the wheels were rumbling and the world slowed down and once again I was a normal ground-bound creature.

I considered going up for one more pattern but it would be hard to top that last light touchdown -- we'll end it this way.

Putt-putt to the hangar, maneuver around a beautifully painted C150, cut off the fuel and wait for the click-click.

I pushed her in, wiped her down, and gave the old lady a pat on the cowling.

Proficiency and training and precision and all that is great.

But sometimes it's nice to just fly.

Reminds me that I promised myself I'd get current for power flying before this year is over... I miss that kind of flying.

Dan, your posts really make me want to fix the fact that I've never flown (or been in) a tube and fabric tailwheel plane. I seriously hope to fix that one of these days.

Awesome. Know what you mean. Just picked up my plane after a month at the shop waiting on a hard-to-find part and four weeks of summer madness at work. It all clicked as I pushed the throttle in for takeoff. Beautiful on the way back home with a double rainbow off my port beam for a while.

Very Nice Dan... makes me want to schedule the Citabria again for 6am.

May finally be getting out your way this Saturday, I'll send you a PM with details.

Dan I know the feeling. I had not flown in over a month recently due to other obligations and I took the plane up for an hour flight just to get some air time. Wow....talk about a joy.

Thanks for reminding us all of why we jump through the hoops we do to fly GA.

Finally! :ihih:

I may actually be driving east this weekend -- our 29th Anniversary and we plan on spending it in Lancaster County!

Congratulations! Our 29th is in a couple of weeks!

John

Sometimes???

I went yesterday. Not much flying this yr. Man is it good to get up in the air.

Hope you're doing ok.

Sounds like last night. We flew '196 up to IIB for a few touch and goes, enjoying the smooth late afternoon air. Did 4 and headed back home with a big sweeping cub-style low-level turn. Back into the pattern at VTI, one T&G and then a full stop, taxiing back to the hangar with the A65 chortling happily. The day before, I'd flown up to DEH with a friend in his Champ. We got to visiting with a corporate pilot with a 2008 C-90 KingAir, admiring his plane. He looked over at the Champ and said, "Seems like people always want what they don't have. This is just a job. You guys are out having fun. I'd rather be flying that."

I think I posted here last year when i flew the Chief to MGW and walked into the FBO. Came back out and two Falcon drivers were looking over my airplane.

:D

To me, all airplanes are worth looking at -- well, except for a few. :rolleyes2:

Isn't it funny. Lots of folks want to check out the Matrix. They stroll over from their Lake Amphibian, or C195, or whatever and I'm thinking - hey, cool plane - and they are thinking the same thing about the Matrix.

I think we'd all have a hanger full of a hundred planes, if only we could.

Me? I'm going to work on figuring out my genealogical connection to Kermit Weeks. I'm pretty sure I'm his long lost son. :D

Don't worry -- you can check out my Chief while i check out your Matrix.

Who is it who said "talking airplanes is a pleasant disease"?

Always wanting a different airplane is a disease that I (and my wife) wish could be cured :goofy: Usually, checking out insurance rates for my supposed next step up cures me for a while. That, and flying.

OTOH, there was a sweet-looking C180 on wheel skis for sale at Lake Hood as I taxied by last night...:cryin:

I don't mind the ailment, but my wife is DEFINITELY looking for surgical options to get me cured!!!!!:D
