I went to the Marine Corps Ball for the 3rdMAW last November - had the honor of meeting three Marines from Korea, Vietnam and Iraq who were award the Medal.
The thing about courage, is that it is the only choice one has to maintain self-respect. That comes from being a member of an organization where you are trained that you are part of the whole, and that whole means more than you, but you know that the entire organization will stop whatever it is doing to come for you. Thus, the only conclusion is that you must give it all up for those around you.
It is a very freeing idea. There is no choice, only the best way to accomplish the goal.
That is what I took away from these men. Thats why they all are universally embarrassed to be awarded a high medal for just doing their job.
