Sociopaths & Lawn Darts & Passengers

Not at all...I passed a kid (about 12 YO) yesterday on our county road. He was doing about 40 mph on his 4 wheeler. No helmet.

And Jarts are dangerous?

The OP was properly supervising the game, that's what responsible adults do. When something happened he took action. It wasn't his fault (like you make it out to be) that an injury may have occurred because the kid is demented.

If anyone is trolling here, it's you, trying to twist the situation into something it wasn't. I would have no problem with letting responsible teens play with Jarts...if I had a set...and after I explicitly told them the potential pitfalls of being stupid with them.

Oh, and BTW, getting hit in the head with a horseshoe might well be life altering too...

I still think you are trolling, but whatever. Point out where I said it's the OPs fault the girl acted out or where I "twist the situation" into something it wasn't, quotes please. The OP said the dart landed uncomfortably close to someone, more than once.

Lawn darts are illegal to sell in the US, and there is a good reason, many deaths and injuries.

If I play your little game put words or meaning into your mouth, I would say that you are implying that all the deaths were caused by irresponsible people too dumb to handle these darts. People not as smart as you, putting out these darts as toys and not properly supervising or warning or whatever else you think will prevent one of these darts from killing someone.

The problem with these darts is that they are heavy and have a point on them, either sharp or blunted, it doesn't matter, that point, coupled with the inertia present when they are tossed at a target, is enough to penetrate a skull or any other part of one's body. The game is typically played with two sides, not unlike horseshoes, taking turns throwing the dart to a target that is usually close to where your opponent stands. Unlike horseshoes, in the unlikely event that dart hits you, it will penetrate what it hits. A horseshoe would certainly hurt, but most likely would not maim or kill you.

I'm not the only one who thinks these things are dangerous....

I guess we just weren't too stupid as kids to not realize these things would really hurt if used improperly like most of our toys, so we had many fun games with no injuries because everyone kept their eye on the flying Jart and got the **** out of its path. I think legislated safety is creating a flock of breeding idiots.

I think most of the deaths were drunken adults with lots de insurance policies. Nothing becomes illegal until it costs the insurance too much money.

How many lawn dart tragic deaths were there total? And how many tragic GA deaths do we have every year? Gosh darn they banned the wrong thing. We need to write letters.

It has nothing to do with deaths, it has to do with insurance payouts exceeding actuarial expectations. Three wheeled ATVs same thing.

Sarcasm man. Poster suggested it was right and moral that them skull sticks were banned. By that standard airplanes don't have a chance

Ain't that the truth.!!!

In my day we learned to be careful or we had to go inside. And going inside was a punishment in those days.

As much as I dislike government intervention, I really don't have much sympathy for this product. There are safer alternatives, with no downside -- other than they are safer.

http://www.cpsc.gov/en/Newsroom/New...USE-SERIOUS-OR-FATAL-HEAD-INJURIES-AND-DEATH/

An estimated 6,100 people have been treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries involving lawn darts from 1978 through 1986. At least 80 percent of the victims were younger than 15 years old, and more than 50 percent were ten years old or younger. More than half of the victims had injuries to the head, eye, ear or face. Investigations indicated that severe injuries included punctures, lacerations and fractures to the head and skull, Although victims were often bystanders, in many cases those playing the game were children.

In addition to the death of the seven year old girl in April, the Commission is aware of one other lawn dart death. This involved a four year old boy and occurred in 1970.

I love that!

Except it'd probably be more accurate if it said:

Our Parents Weren't Complete Retards Back Then.

It's not the same, if you can't see that I can't help you.

They are products that kill people using them and sometimes people that aren't using them. For the children doesn't stop with your hobby.

well, to be fair, people generally knew that idiots wouldn't listen to the warning anyway.

I must be an idiot. We used to tape model rocket engines on our skateboards and light them hoping to jump a ramp that way.

 Estes D motors had many uses besides rockets. Although rockets themselves had some interesting times. Once my parachute didn't pop and I lined up under the rocket to try and catch it... Then I heard it whistling and stepped back.

I've done the trying to catch with and without the parachute, too. We also used to replace the parachutes with firecrackers. That was a 1 way flight.

With an airplane you train to minimize the risks, you understand the risks after you are trained and you explain the risk to your passengers.

Lawn darts, not so much.

Wrap a D motor with half a roll of duct tape and it makes a nifty firecracker too.

A lot of us born in the 60s talk about the good old days when we used to have BB gun fights, bottle rocket fights, ride motorcycles w/o helmets and jump off balconies using an umbrella as a parachute and no one was ever hurt. I suspect a lot of kids were hurt and died doing dumb things. That we were just the lucky ones.

I remember one summer day between 4th and 5th grades, mom was reading the newspaper and asked if I knew Gail Stone. "Yeah, she's in my class."

"She died yesterday when her horse stepped in a hole and fell on her."

To an extent, I try to protect my kids. I'd probably let them play with lawn darts because the odds of getting hurt aren't that great and they don't seem overly dangerous. I wouldn't feel that way if I was one of the unlucky parents though.

I read an article yesterday about a woman who had to defend herself not once, but twice, when CPS was called because she let her 6 and 10 year old play by themselves at a park a mile from home. That's a case where you want to choke both the person who called CPS, and the case worker who pursued the investigation. Some decisions really are best left to the parents.

Accidental deaths in children declined by about 1/2 between the 60s and 1990s, since then it has gone down further. The only area that is rising are accidental poisonings, and that is mostly skewed by prescription drug abuse in teenagers. The good old days were anything but. I remember one kid from my childhood who is permanently disabled from a fall from a bicycle, another kid died from hitting his head on the curb falling from a tricycle. I don't believe that having them wear helmets would have eliminated any gene-pool cleansing effects.

Accidents still happen, children still die. Why do you hate children?

Nah we totally did that stuff. It just didn't occur to us to blame anyone but ourselves when we got hurt in our stupid games. That's where society messed up IMHO. Everything has to be idiot proofed now....and no fun allowed.

Exactly, and we NEVER ran home crying to mom. "What happened to you!?!" "Oh nothing, I just fell down playing..." Crash and burn? Limp it off and deny any injury.

*climb up on kitchen counter, climb up on fridge, fall, hurt self*

"...and what did we learn?"

Exactly, and we NEVER ran home crying to mom.

True, and we also had moms who said stuff like:

If I ever hear of you starting a fight, I'll whoop your ass. But if I ever hear of you backing down from one, I'll whoop it doubly."

At least mine did! :wink2:

True nuff. Point is, back then we KNEW what the likely outcome was and decided to do it anyway. Now they run PSAs telling kids that cartoons aren't good role models.

Thanks, but I figured that out for myself 5 minutes into my first Tom and Jerry short.

There is no such thing as common sense, nor accountability anymore. Everyone blames everyone else when they do stupid stuff. What has happened to this country?
