Here is the scenario. You're out of town (hell you can be in town) but you're on a rural road on your bike a couple miles from the nearest populated place and you notice a set of keys on the ground. Like some car keys and a fob thing and probably house keys. No ID on them.

The nearest town is a touristy place, with lots of people passing through, a few restaurants and resorts, and shops and all. The probability that you would be able to reconnect the keys with the owner is nil.

Do you leave them there? Do you pick them up and turn them in someplace? Maybe the local PD? Dance around town square like a crazy person announcing "I have keys?" Ride through town while depressing the panic button?

I'd leave them there. I may hang them on a stick I push in the ground where I found them so they are easier to see.

The the person who lost them know where they have been, and would look in those places.

<insert joke about putting under light so drunk can find them >

Leave them there chances are someone will come looking. Maybe do something to make them stand out? Stab a stick in the ground and hang them from it? Or tie them dead center in the middle of a road sign. Chances are it was a local cyclist or jogger they will know the route and retrace there steps.

Because your are the world renouned Sac, it must be an invitation combined with an intelligence test. If you can find her, you already have the key to her apartment.

Leave them ,so when the person retraces their route they don't go crazy .

That is what I did. I didn't hang them on a sign or anything as I would expect them to be looking down.

In retrospect, and maybe there are reasons you shouldn't do this, but if the owner had attached a tag with a phone number on the key set, they would have been a lot happier.

That would be my vote

I just don't lose my keys.....

With that said I once left my keys on top of a high wing Cessna after fueling up, then took off. After landing I found the keys on the runway right where I rotated.

I used to have a tag that said if found drop in any mailbox. Then they would go to my PO box. But I lost the tag.....

When Ifirst joined AOPA, that was one of the services you could get. Buy the tag for $5, they engraved your membership number on it, and your keys would go to them, then on to you. I never had to use it and the tag is still on my keyring.
I should ask member services if they still do that. I doubt it though. Bo money to be made in it.

Take out a 30-second ad during the next Super Bowl indicating that you found them. ;)

"You are inside a building. A well house for a large spring.

There are some keys on the ground here.

There is a shiny brass lamp nearby.

There is food here.

There is a bottle of water here."

dot dot dot.
